WWE Releases Shake Up Free Agency: Where Will Everyone Land?

Read Time:2 Minute, 40 Second

The pro wrestling free agency has seen some new names recently, some for the first time. On February 7th, WWE announced the release of 11 wrestlers. With the exception of Sonya Deville, the contracts were not renewed, they were terminated. These releases have sparked widespread speculation regarding potential landing spots for the affected wrestlers. Fans are wondering which promotions might be interested in signing them to bolster their rosters.

Potential Destinations

AEW: A Viable Option?

One of the most prominent names on the list of releases is Cedric Alexander. Many believe that Alexander’s most likely destination is All Elite Wrestling, particularly due to his previous affiliation with The Hurt Business, which has since been rebranded as The Hurt Syndicate in AEW. Given his technical prowess and in-ring capabilities, he would seemingly be a strong addition to AEW’s roster. However, there are a couple of key factors working against this move. Firstly, Alexander’s wife, Big Swole, departed AEW on bad terms, publicly citing issues with diversity within the company. Secondly, Alexander himself has previously made negative remarks about AEW on social media. The promotion has a history of being cautious with signings when past controversies are involved.

While still on the topic of AEW, the company owned by Tony Khan appears to be limiting the number of former WWE superstars it signs. AEW’s roster is already stacked, and with a focus on developing homegrown talent, they may only sign one or two wrestlers from this round of releases at most. Another name linked to AEW is Blair Davenport, better known in the independent scene as Bea Priestley. She was previously part of AEW before her WWE tenure. But like Alexander, her relationship with AEW ended on a sour note, which could complicate any potential return.

NJPW: A Less Likely Option

Some have speculated that New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) could be a destination for certain wrestlers on this list. However, NJPW is currently in a transitional phase, focusing on elevating young, homegrown talent into the main event scene. Historically, NJPW has not actively pursued many former WWE talents unless they bring significant international appeal. Given this, none of the released names appear to be a great fit for NJPW, making this an unlikely destination.

TNA & MLW: Possible Landing Spots?

If AEW and NJPW are unlikely landing spots, TNA and Major League Wrestling (MLW) could be viable alternatives for the new free agents.

  • TNA has a history of revitalizing the careers of former WWE stars. We could see potential in names like Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson head to TNA, considering their past success in the company.
  • MLW, while a smaller promotion, could benefit from adding talents like Giovanni Vinci or Isla Dawn. Both could use the platform to showcase their skills in a fresh environment.
