Women set to headline WrestleMania for the first time ever

WWE officially announced that the main event of WrestleMania 35 on April 7th will be the triple threat match between Becky Lynch, Ronda Rousey, and Charlotte Flair for the Raw Women’s Championship.

WWE likes to use the terms “historic” and “first-ever” a lot, but this main event is truly historic. They have come a long way since the Diva era, where women’s wrestling was treated as a side show and a way to cool the crowd off before a big match. Women were simply eye candy for the crowd, they would “compete” in matches in bras and panties and also had pillow fight matches. This era came shortly after some of the best women’s wrestlers retired. Women like Chyna, Jacqueline, Ivory, Molly Holly, Lita, and Trish Stratus. Lita and Trish. Although they competed in those matches like that, they always did more than most of the division that consisted of models.

Slowly but surely, WWE would open their eyes to the concept of highlighting talented women in main events and first-ever matches.

There is much debate about when the “women’s revolution” started in WWE, however it has been connected to NXT. While the women on Raw and SmackDown were barely getting matches, the ladies in NXT were getting more air time and showcasing some of the best matches in the company’s history. It started with Emma and Paige and it evolved to what is referred to as the Four Horsewoman of WWE: Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, and Bayley. When Paige came up to the main roster, her and AJ Lee really started to put a spotlight on women’s wrestling.

Down in NXT, Banks and Bayley had one of the best feuds in history. The buzz around women’s wrestling that Paige and Emma started in NXT eventually bled onto the main roster. Then in 2015, Stephanie McMahon debuted 3/4 of the Four Horsewoman on Raw to confront the Bella Twins. From this point on, WWE started to treat women’s wrestling as actual wrestling. Slowly, WWE put faith in these women and put a spotlight on them that had never been seen before.

Fast forward to 2019 and the biggest mainstream star in WWE is a woman, and their biggest superstar is also a women (although she’s known as The Man). Since Becky started to make her rise to the main event scene, she has gained a huge following. After she received a bloody nose when Raw invaded SmackDown before Survivor Series, she has been the biggest wrestler on the roster. Once Becky won the women’s Royal Rumble by eliminating Charlotte, this became the biggest match going into WrestleMania in New York.

Now that we know that this will be the main event, this will be the biggest match in the history of women’s wrestling, and I think it will deliver in a big way.

It started with Paige and Emma, it was carried by the Four Horsewomen, and now Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and Ronda Rousey will be engraved in history as the first women to main event the biggest wrestling show of the year. When you look at women’s wrestling throughout the years, it was nothing, then it was something, and on April 7th it will be the main event.

So many Women have fought for better and 15 years after Trish Stratus and Lita were the main event Raw, these three will headline the show on the grandest stage of them all.
