Will Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje deliver once more?

Read Time:3 Minute, 14 Second

In the cut and thrust of the UFC, starts are ten a penny but in Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje, two Bonafede heroes off the sport are set to go toe to toe at the Delta Centre in Utah.

Both men have endured rollercoaster careers, working their way through the ranks in the notoriously tough American wrestling scene to hone their skills and be ready to compete at the very top of the lightweight division in the UFC.

The success of both Poirier and Gaethje is perhaps best described by the overall strength of the other fighters in the division. The likes of Conor McGregor, Charles Oliveira and the all-conquering Khabib Nurmagomedov have all been vying for supremacy in the weight class in recent years, a testament to the difficulty of each bout for every fighter.2

With Poirier vs. Gaethje 2 one of the most talked about events in the UFC in recent times, it promises to be a fight for the ages on July 29th and the world awaits with bated breath to see how these two greats of the UFC fare up against one and other.

Key to the intrigue surrounding the fight is the multitude of betting markets available to UFC punters and with two superstars going at it, there are plenty of intriguing betting narratives surrounding Poirier vs Gaethje 2. All of the biggest sports betting apps globally will be looking to offer competitive odds and offers on what promises to be an incredible bout in Utah.

Will Poirier Produce The Goods Once Again?

It has been over 5 years since Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje last did battle. In the Spring of 2018, both men were on the brink of two glittering careers in the UFC. It was Poirier who came out on top in Arizona that day and he remains the favorite with many bookmakers to emerge victorious again here.

Few fighters have enjoyed the late career boom that Dustin Poirier has, initially struggling to make a name for himself in the UFC, before becoming one of the most prolific fighters around. Since 2016, only Khabib and Charles Oliveira have managed to beat Poirier, a run of wins that has seen him see off the likes of Conor McGregor, Max Holloway, and Eddie Alvarez.

Scheduling may be the only question mark surrounding Poirier of late, with the man from Louisiana really having reduced his fights in recent times, last appearing in a win over Michael Chandler in November 2022 – his only fight of the last calendar year.

He will be fit and ready for this one however, with no love lost between these two fighters and it promises to be one for the UFC purists in Utah.

Can Gaethje Get The Job Done?

When these two fighters last met back in 2018, it was crowned the Fight of the Year by the UFC and various publications – adding even more to the sense of intrigue surrounding this match up.

Crucially too, Justin Gaethje has been vocal in his belief that he would always win a rematch with Dustin Poirier, and now the 34 year-old finally gets his chance.

The similarities between the two fighters both in terms of career trajectories and fighting styles can be drawn but Justin Gaethje doesn’t normally look to engage in too many niceties, seeking to take the initiative from the off wherever possible.

In a remarkable twist of fate, the aforementioned Charles Oliveira and Khabib are also the only two fighters to have beaten Gaethje in the past 5 years, giving grist to the mill that this should be a hugely close match up.

The attention of the wider sporting world and the UFC fraternity will inevitably be on Poirier vs. Gaethje 2 when they clash in Utah on July 29th. It promises to be a fight to remember once more.
