Why Colby Covington vs. Gilbert Burns is needed in 2025
Colby Covington recently took to social media to call out Gilbert Burns for leaking Chael Sonnen’s phone number. Burns subsequently responded with memes calling for a fight. These two were once top welterweight contenders. Now, they’re both on losing streaks.
This is a fight that could’ve happened years ago, but here is why we need it in 2025:
It’s The Biggest Fight To Make At This Point In Their Careers
Let’s face it. Colby Covington and Gilbert Burns are the farthest they’ve ever been from title contention. Covington got dominated by Leon Edwards in their title fight last December at UFC 296. He then got finished by Joaquin Buckley in an absolute mauling at UFC Tampa to close out 2024. The cardio machine who walked forward with relentless pressure now looks like a shell of himself.
On the other hand, Gilbert Burns has lost three in a row. After suffering a lopsided defeat to now champion Belal Muhammad at UFC 288, he has had a brutal 2024. He was dominating Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 299 until the last minute, where JDM scored a knockout. Following that, he was mauled by Sean Brady in the Apex.
To be fair, Covington and Burns’ recent 5 losses have come to guys ranked 1, 4, 5, 6, and the champion. So, there is no shame in that. However, the winner of this fight could jump back into the title picture, given how big this fight could be.
Covington is the most vile trash talker the UFC has ever seen, while Burns has built his brand with his “Show Me The Money” Podcast. These two would have a healthy build up of trash talk, while maintaining some respect. Why some respect? Covington always calls Burns a “family man” before he hurls an insult. So there could be a level of admiration between the two…
They Will Bring Out The Best In Each Other
Enough of fighting young, hungry contenders. Burns and Covington are some of the best grapplers in the UFC, and have a strong stand up game to back it up. A fight between these two would have been epic a couple years ago. But could we turn back the clock and have these two fight at the rumored UFC 314 PPV in Miami this April?
Perhaps the scrambles and striking exchanges between these two will help bring the best out of one another? Sometimes a hard, equally matched fight can help extend a high-level fighter’s career. This fight could be an absolute war, with some of the best scrambles in MMA history.
