What is the future of ROH after Tony Khan’s announcement?

Read Time:2 Minute, 19 Second

Last night, Tony Khan made the announcement that he was the new owner of ROH. With this announcement, it created a lot of questions regarding the future of ROH.

What can we expect from this new ownership for ROH?

Feeder System

As most of you may know, Tony Khan is also the owner of Fulham and something very important in football and any sport really, is investing in the future. Ring of Honor being the official AEW feeder system would be a great way for young wrestlers under contract with AEW to get even more ring time and develop.

ROH could also serve as a scouting show of interesting indie wrestlers, just like we see currently with Dark and Elevation right now. The promotion having it’s own YouTube show until it get picked up by a TV station could be interesting as well.

Making ROH exclusively a feeder promotion, especially considering the legacy the promotion has, would be a disappointment. Elevation and Dark already do the function of feeder shows for AEW, so ROH doing it too would be redundant…

Independent Promotion

Another alternative would be for ROH to remain independent and with a few AEW wrestlers making appearances on ROH shows to boost attendance numbers and book interesting matches with non-AEW wrestlers.

ROH staying independent while still being on the AEW umbrella would be the best. ROH would be able to do their thing. Best part is they wouldn’t have to worry about money. They would get the best of both worlds too, as mentioned before with getting access to AEW talent and the hottest indie wrestlers in the world. It would also be a place for indie wrestlers to get more work.

AEW could still do the feeder stuff too, but it wouldn’t be the focus of the whole show. There’s also negative aspects to this alternative. First, Khan would need to find a booker he trusts to give him the keys of ROH and their aren’t many out there that could do a good job.

Long Term Plan

What’s the long term plan of Khan’s purchase of ROH? Having a big library when streaming services are offering huge amounts of money for them seems to be the plan for Khan. AEW has been building their library these last few years for a moment like this, and purchasing ROH’s library makes sense. It would be surprising if Tony Khan’s next purchase is the Shimmer library or maybe, and just maybe… PWG’s library.

In terms of the promotion itself, we’ll have to wait and see what Tony Khan’s actual plans are, and if he wants to keep ROH alive. The most likely scenario is that he might. Khan has vast knowledge of wresting history and closing ROH would a big mistake.
