Wednesday Night Wars: WWE NXT Week 17 Review
NXT was a big show this week, with the Dusty Classic continuing, and a championship main event. Was it any good? Let’s get into it!
Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Update
This week in the semi-finals the BroserWeights took on Imperium, and Grizzled Young Vets took on Undisputed Era.
In the first match of night, in a big upset Grizzled Young Vets defeated Undisputed Era. The match was fantastic as you’d expect from these teams, but the result really surprised me. Now it makes sense because you needed a heel team to take on the other team in the finals. Grizzled Young Veterans are the perfect team to be in the finals. Bit disappointed to see Undisputed Era knocked out, but a good decision.
Then later on in the show, the best team in the history of the tournament defeated Imperium. The Dusty Classic is famous for unlikely teams (Joe and Balor, Strong and Dunne, Black and Ricochet) but Pete Dunne and Matt Riddle are amazing. Their in-ring style compliments each other perfectly, and the clash of characters is immensely entertaining. I could watch these two as a tag team forever. After Dunne and Riddle defeated Imperium, Grizzled Young Vets cut a promo, Riddle made a Marijuana joke, fantastic.
Riddle and Dunne will take on Grizzled Young Vets in the finals.
Toni Storm Makes a Statement
I talk about the NXT Women’s division every week, because it is the best women’s division in the world. Toni Storm took on Io Shirai this week, and it was fantastic. The two have had amazing matches before in Japan, and they have not lost that chemistry.
This was a fantastic match, and then Bianca Belair came out and hit Toni, causing a DQ. Then Belair beat up Toni, until she was interrupted by Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley. The three brawled, but Storm ended up standing tall. She held up the Women’s Championship and that was the segment.
This was a great way to build Belair who is the #1 contender, and Toni Storm vs. Rhea Ripley at Worlds Collide.
Lee is Limitless
Then in the main event Keith Lee got his shot at Roderick Strong’s North American Championship. I had high hopes for this match and it delivered.
If you did not watch NXT this week I urge you to at least watch this match. It amazes me how NXT can have TakeOver-level matches every week. This could have easily been on a PPV, it was fantastic. After Strong decimated Lee’s ankle all match, Lee picked up the win.
We have a new NXT North American Champion, Keith Lee. His first piece of gold in NXT and it is so well deserved.
