Vasyl Lomachenko talks weight drop & Gervonta Davis
Lomachenko Could Be Dropping to 130lbs
Vasyl Lomachenko is considered by many as the pound for pound best boxer on the planet. Keeping that in mind, Loma will be able to draw any division’s top athletes, as they all want to take down the pound for pound king. However, for “Hi-Tech”, the need to keep moving up in weight isn’t necessary. Especially before unifying the 135lb division.
More than likely, Lomachenko’s next bout will take place against Teofimo Lopez. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum recently said the bout could take place during April at Madison Square Garden or the Barclay Center. If those don’t pan out, Saudi Arabia is interested in hosting the event in May.
Currently, Loma holds the lightweight WBO, WBA and “The Ring” titles. Lopez however, is the only man stopping the unification as he holds the IBF lightweight title. If Loma can beat Lopez and unify, then he’ll consider another weight change. Vasyl spoke with Teddy Atlas to reveal his future changes in weight.
Lomachenko on Gervonta Davis
One name that everyone is excited for Loma to face is Gervonta Davis. However, Vasyl looks at him, his TMT (The Money Team), and Mayweather Promotions as businessmen, not fighters.
“I’m 31-years-old, and I’m not 20-years-old,” Lomachenko said. “They are businessmen, they are not Athlete,” said Lomachenko about Gervonta Davis. “I want to fight with the top fighters, and I want to fight with the top guys for history. For my history, and for boxing history. That’s why we can make fights.
Loma also included that if he were to change weight again, he would move down to 130lbs, not up. This is odd because the 135lb division offers incredible competitive options as well as bigger names as far as money goes. Names like WBA champion Gervonta Davis and WBC champion Devin Haney.
“I can lose my weight, and fight with a top fighter at 130. said Lomachenko. “Now, it’s my limit (at 135), because 135 is not my natural weight,” said Lomachenko.
What’s Next for Hi-Tech?
Whatever Loma decides to do next will be box office regardless. However, there are some fans out there that believe he is ironically escaping a division that is finally filled with young hungry lions.
Regardless, everyone will turn in to see Loma fight. No matter the weight or opponent.
