Unpopular Opinion: Not all Matches need a Story
Wrestling Twitter is never short of discussions, and the most recent one has been about storylines for matches.
For context, Tony Khan recently announced the dream match of Hijo del Vikingo vs. Kenny Omega for AEW Dynamite. This match created two topics, first was about what a dream match is, and the other, we’ll tackle here…
It’s worth pointing out that this match was originally supposed to take place in 2021 at the AAA show, TripleMania. Unfortunately, Kenny Omega’s injuries and scheduling conflicts made the booking impossible, until now.
The match was originally going to be for the AAA Mega Campeonato, with Omega being the holder of the championship at that moment, before vacating it. But after waiting a year, the match will finally take place.
Stories & Matches
While most fans celebrated the announcement of Hijo del Vikingo vs. Kenny Omega, others were not so excited and it was because there was no story behind the match. Well… There is a reason this match is finally taking place. AEW also released a short video package explaining who Vikingo is, while showcasing his talents. So, all those things were covered.
Do all matches need a story though? The answer is no. Not all matches need a reason to happen, sometimes a match can happen because two wrestlers want to face each other, like Omega and Vikingo. Matches without an explanation or backstory can have their own story, but taking place in the middle of the ring to determine who is better. Matches don’t need complicated stories to justify their existence, and that’s the main point…
AEW and other promotions will always face these kinds of discussions because of WWE’s monopoly over American wrestling for almost two decades. For some people, the only way pro wrestling can be done is the way Vince McMahon did it for many years and any other way is wrong. This is what is happening with AEW and even with other promotions when they don’t do things the same way. This unfortunately will never end, and these comparisons will always take place.
This also goes back to the argument about casual fans. WWE is built for casuals, and AEW is the opposite. It’s also worth noting that the foundations of AEW come from wrestling fans consuming all kinds of wrestling from all over the world.
