Tobias Baker thankful for time off, ‘getting to nerd out’ with some Anime
Tobias Baker (2-1) told The Scrap that a lot has happened since his last fight five months ago.
The Oregon-based fighter spoke about last November, when he had his first career loss to Adam Thomson (1-1) at PureCombat: Battle for the Brave in Salem, Oregon.
βAfter I lost that last fight to a rear-naked choke, I went through some personal things and took a trip home to meet my manager Matt Dodge of Miami-based Dodge Sports and his fiance Hayley. I’m in really good hands with these guys.β He also made a decision to move gyms and now trains at American Top Team: Portland.
During his time in quarantine, βThe Heathenβ said he has been doing all of his strength training remotely. Baker said he is lucky to have a cardio coach as well during this time who is hooking him up with track workouts. βTwo to three times a week I get that hard lung push,β Baker said. He added that his goal right now is to keep his cardio high, βThatβs what people are going to lose during this time.β
The twenty-three-year-old said that he along with a lot of fighters are thankful for this time off. The fighting game, he explained, sometimes has you jumping from fight to fight with little time for rest and recovery.
βItβs been really pleasant having that okay I can listen to my body today,” he expressed, “Itβs nice letting the body get back to its normal state and letting any injuries heal up. I have been trying to keep doing a lot more yoga and stretching and working on my flexibility as well. I am trying to treat my body a little better.β
The middleweight said he is also trying to stay as productive as he can during this time while enjoying the little things. He admitted that he is a huge anime fan and has been; βGetting a chance to nerd out on that. Anime is based on martial arts so fighters can tie it into their own storyline and use it as a little motivation here and there.β
As far as news about the pandemic, Baker said he tries to get his facts from the source and keeps himself as educated as he can. βI focus on the fact that this has got to end eventually and I have to be ready to fight.”
