Three Must-See Fights Boxing Fans Want

Read Time:6 Minute, 10 Second

The state of boxing has never seemed better as Turki Alalshikh continues to expand his imprint on the fight game. The time of big fights never coming to fruition is a distant memory now. That said, fans are eager to see the best the gladiator sport offers. A few fights in particular stand out:

Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua

Better late than never. That’s the perfect phrase to capture the storyline of this potential all-time British heavyweight clash. Tyson Fury (34-2-1, 24 KO) and Anthony Joshua (28-4-0, 25 KO) are former world champions. They have been on a collision course for most of their professional careers.

Some critics may say that this fight no longer enthralls the public. However, others still want to see this generation’s two best British heavyweights duke it out. They want them to settle their past disputes.
But, Fury announced his retirement via social media in January this year.

“I’m going to keep this short and sweet; I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing,” Fury told followers on social media.

This came a few weeks after his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk for the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship. ‘The Gypsy King’ is known to use retirement as a tactic. He does this to increase his value in comeback fights. Therefore, many pundits have taken his January announcement with a grain of salt.

Additionally, Anthony Joshua has been vocal in pushing for a fight with the former WBC Heavyweight World Champion. In January, Joshua attended the Ring Magazine Awards. During the event, he mentioned his desire to fight Fury while talking to broadcaster Ade Oladipo. “I ain’t got many years ahead of me. You know I’ve had more years behind me than in front of me. So, I want to leave the game with a bang and make an impact. Be outlandish. Great character. Have fun with it while we’re doing it, and go for the big fights. Tyson Fury is one of them.”

Will They Settle The Score?

Fury and Joshua’s rivalry dates back to their younger days. They were both featured in the classic 2013 Gloves Are Off segment on Sky Sports Boxing. British boxing legend Ricky Hatton recently discussed the topic while talking to Sky Sports Boxing.

“I think Tyson will kick himself if he’s sat on his sofa 10 years down the line and thinks to himself: ‘I wonder what would have happened if I’d have fought AJ?'” Hatton said.

This potential heavyweight clash between the former champions must happen. It would be one of the biggest fights in British boxing history. Frank Warren of Queensberry Promotions and Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing would pack Wembley Stadium and the O2 Arena.

In boxing, no weight class captures the public’s attention quite like heavyweight. These two legends of the fight game still have the energy to deliver a historic event and command the spotlight.

Caleb Plant vs. Edgar Berlanga

Former IBF World Super Middleweight Champion Caleb Plant (23-2-0, 14 KO) and WBO NABO Super Middleweight Champion Edgar Berlanga (23-1-0, 18 KO) have exchanged words and insults. The two seem to be on a collision course.

During the kick-off press conference for the Alvarez-Berlanga card, Berlanga reignited the beef by trashing Plant on the mic. Plant was in the crowd, and the pair started exchanging unpleasant words.

As done before to previous enemies, Plant purchased the domain EdgarBerlanga.com to sell merchandise in the lead-up to this fight with McCumby. Plant fought undefeated Trevor MccCumby on the undercard of Berlanga’s headline event. The slick and crafty former champion weathered an early storm from the hard-hitting undefeated fighter. He achieved an impressive ninth-round TKO to win the Interim WBA Super Middleweight Championship.

Berlanga’s night was not as successful, as he lost a definitive unanimous decision to Alvarez. The Puerto Rican knockout artist recently returned to the ring with a statement-making first-round TKO over undefeated Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz on March 15.

A Money Matchup

After the fight, Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn expressed the selling power of a potential Plant-Berlanga matchup.

“I Like the Caleb Plant fight. I think that’s a truly brilliant fight. Two guys that are going to really spice it up at the press conference. Two great fighters, two great 168 pounders,” Hearn voiced on the mic.
Berlanga did not mince his feelings toward Plant as he interjected with expletives.

Plant reacted to Hearn and Berlanga’s post-fight words with a tweet of the segment, captioning the post.

“And the crowd goes MILD!!!! Nobody even pitched in on the chant @EdgarBerlangaJr -1000 aura on that one….”

The two super middleweights are only five years apart in age. Both rank inside the top ten for the division. They have come up short against Canelo. Both are coming off stoppage victories, so this fight is perfect for both men. It will draw public interest and catapult them towards another title shot. It also provides the opportunity to settle their differences.

Naoya Inoue vs. Nick Ball

There is a massive fight brewing at featherweight as boxing’s pound-for-pound No. 2-ranked Naoya Inoue (29-0-0, 26 KO) seems to have his eyes set on Liverpool’s undefeated WBA World Featherweight Champion Nick Ball (22-0-1, 13 KO). The Japanese superstar is one of the greatest ever to lace up a pair of gloves. He became a four-weight champion and undisputed champion at bantamweight and super bantamweight. However, the Ball seems keen on taking on the formidable challenge.

Both men are coming off stoppage victories. Inoue faced short-notice replacement Ye Joon Kim in his most recent fight. This happened after mandatory challenger Sam Goodman withdrew due to an injury. As for Ball, he recently crossed paths with TJ Doheny on March 15.

The two-weight undisputed champion has a busy schedule lined up at the moment. Inoue has publicly planned to fight in Las Vegas and Saudi Arabia this year. At the moment, he plans to defend his undisputed super bantamweight title. He will face Ramon Cardenas (26-1-0, 14 KO) on May 4.

If Inoue wins as expected, he will likely face WBA mandatory challenger Murodjon Akhmadaliev (13-1-0, 10 KO). This bout is planned to take place in Japan on September 14.

An Electrifying Spectacle

Queensberry Presenter and Host Dev Sahni has made his opinion of a hypothetical fight between Inoue and Ball known.

Back to Ball. The Liverpool native has been gaining recognition in the boxing realm over the last two years. This is due to his rough fighting style and his willingness to take on the biggest challenges. Ball has taken down Raymond Ford, Ronny Rios, Isaac Dogboe, and most recently TJ Doheny.

Inoue watched Ball’s most recent performance and took to social media shortly after his fight to give his take on the snowballing fight.

The contrasting styles of these two world champions make for a thrilling showdown. Both boxers come forward and deliver fight-ending blows to one another, making it a must-see for fans worldwide.
