The current state of UFC’s bantamweight division
The main event at UFC 227 is scheduled to be a rematch between the champion TJ Dillashaw, and the man he took the belt from, Cody “No Love” Garbrant. This match could prove to be a show of the most dominant fighter in the 135-pound division. Dillashaw lost the title to Dominick Cruz back in January of 2016 via split decision. After the loss he found himself back in the win column with two consecutive wins to set up another title opportunity.
After Cruz won the belt, he was able to defend his title once against Urijah Faber, before losing the belt to Garbrant in a unanimous decision. The tension between Garbrant and Dillashaw made for an interesting match for No Love’s first title defense. The belt continued to change hands quickly as Garbrant lost against Dillashaw via second-round knockout. All of this leads to the rematch.
This fight stands to show who is the most dominant fighter in the bantamweight division. Another strong performance from Dillashaw proves he is the better fighter between himself and Garbrant. A decisive win from Garbrant could mean he has beaten the best 135-pounders in Dominick Cruz and TJ Dillashaw, helping prove his own case to be named the best in the division. This appears to be a strong case in what seems to be a division run by these three fighters, and having beaten them both would put Cody at the top of the mountain.
If Dillashaw wins the fight, Cruz may be the next in line. There also may be truth in a best 2 out of 3 scenario emerging if Garbrant finds himself with the belt again. Although the buzz around the bantamweight division is around these three men, make sure to watch out for other 135ers like, “Magic” Marlon Moraes. Moraes finds himself on a three fight win streak against ranked and respected opponents in John Dodson, Aljamain Sterling, and Jimmie Rivera.
