Vicente Luque feels he deserves to be in top-15, wants ranked opponent next
At UFC Uruguay, Mike Perry suffered a broken nose due to a knee from Vicente Luque.
“It was pretty crazy,” Luque admitted when asked about the injury which he only noticed after the fight.
Vicente Luque on The Ultimate Fighter
Luque trains at Cerrado MMA in Brazil and Hard Knocks 365 in Florida. The 27-year-old began his martial arts career doing karate at the age of 3. At 15 he started Muay Thai and at 17 had his first MMA fight. In 2014 he was on Season 21 of The Ultimate Fighter, Blackzillians vs. American Top Team.
“It was a very different experience being on the show. The guy that’s in the cage with me, he’s another man just like me.”
The fighter explained that realization helped him understand he had nothing to fear.
“The Silent Assassin”
During his time on The Ultimate Fighter, Luque was nicknamed “The Silent Assassin” by his manager at the time, the late Glenn Robinson.
“I didn’t speak too much. I was quiet and did my work. When I stepped into the cage, I showed I worked and had potential.”
Calling Out Stephen Thompson
Luque (17-6-1) currently sits at #15 in the UFC welterweight division. After fighting four times in the last ten months, he is looking to get one last fight in before the end of the year, hopefully with Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. “He is the perfect fight for me,” said Luque. “With Thompson’s karate style striking and my Muay Thai style, the two styles will clash against each other to make a really exciting fight.”
Chasing gold, he believes with a win over Thompson, a title shot should be in his future. “I am showing that I deserve to be in the top-15,” said Luque. “I deserve to fight a ranked opponent”.
