The Rocco & Ryan MMA Show: Blaydes vs. Volkov Preview + Predictions
On the sixth episode of ‘The Rocco & Ryan MMA Show’, the guys recap last weekend’s UFC Fight Night card, and preview the event this weekend. UFC Vegas 3 will be headlined by a heavyweight matchup between Curtis Blaydes (13-2) and Alexander Volkov (31-7) at the UFC Apex.
Last weekend we saw Cynthia Calvillo beat Jessica Eye via unanimous decision in the main event. Rocco explained he believes this win is huge for Calvillo and he expects it to cement her as a flyweight contender. “I think she deserves a top 5 fight after that, I haven’t been that high on Eye leading in to the fight and I didn’t think the UFC was very high on her either. I think the UFC matched this fight to help build Calvillo into a bigger star”.
The co-main event of the evening saw Marvin Vettori run through Karl Roberson, finishing him in the first round. Although the win was impressive, Rocco Martin still has his reservations on the budding middleweight contender.
“I don’t know, I need to see more of a test. I know he had a good fight against Israel, but matchups make fights and I don’t think Israel’s output was that heavy,” said Martin. “Vettori is so tough he keeps coming forward, so I think that made the fight seem a little closer. Obviously there was so much drama with that fight, Roberson missing weight, and I think that’s very unprofessional. You keep talking sh*t and going back forth and saying everything is on track; then you come in 5 pounds over and you get run over. That was impressive for Vettori and he deserves a top 10 fight next so we can see where he’s at before I make a true judgement on where he’s at”.
With another great UFC Fight Night in the books, the UFC looks forward to this Saturday evening. The guys make their picks for the main card, looking to improve their record. Both had records at (3-2) after their UFC 250 picks.
Ryan’s picks: (Roberts, Muhammad, Pennington, Emmett, & Volkov)
Rocco’s picks: (Miller, Muhammad, Reneau, Emmett, & Blaydes)
Martin also discussed what’s going on in his world, since he’s reflected on his fight against Neil Magny. He also details his plans moving forward and if he expects to sign a new deal with the UFC. “I’ve talked to Sean Shelby a little bit but he’s keeping his cards tight. He didn’t say no. I asked him point blank if he plans to resign me and he said they are full until August and we will go from there. He didn’t say no, so that’s a good thing. So I’m gonna go ahead and have my knee surgery, probably next week, and get my knee cleaned up. It’s just a couple minor surgeries, I’ll be just a week or two recovering and I’ll be back to training”.
After his surgery, Rocco plans to keep his head down and train to get ready for August.
