The PFL Flyweight Division could produce the most intriguing Playoffs yet
Shockwaves were sent around the combat sports world when PFL acquired Bellator. Two-time lightweight champion Kayla Harrison left for the UFC and two-division champion Larissa Pacheco is waiting for her money fight with Cris Cyborg… So the PFL was left with limited marketability in its women’s featherweight division. Luckily, one of the benefits of this acquisition has been Bellator’s strong women’s flyweight division.
At the beginning of the year, the PFL introduced the women’s flyweight division as part of the 2024 PFL season. It features the undefeated 2023 PFL Europe champion, Dakota Ditcheva, who is only 25 years old. Reigning Bellator flyweight champion Liz Carmouche is also part of the season. But the biggest splash was when former UFC title challenger Taila Santos signed with the PFL. Many believe she deserved a decision victory over the legendary Valentina Shevchenko.
How did the three biggest names at flyweight fare in their first PFL Regular Season fight?
They all emerged victorious, putting them just one win away from securing a spot in the playoffs. But, many are discontent with the PFL’s matchmaking decisions, as the three have been handed favorable matchups for their second regular season fight this Thursday. For example, Ditcheva’s upcoming match is against Chelsea Hackett, who was submitted in the first round of her last fight.
If the favorites do win their matchups Thursday, a blockbuster semifinal and mouth-watering championship bout could be set up. Any matchup between Ditcheva, Santos, and Carmouche appears to be guaranteed fireworks. If these three keep winning, the PFL women’s flyweight title could easily be the main event of the 2024 PFL Championships at the end of the year.
Which PFL division will have the most interesting playoffs this year? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
