The man behind the sunglasses: Who is The Schmo?
When you look up the definition of “schmo” in the dictionary the word means a dull or stupid person; however, The Schmo is anything but that.
He is a sports personality created by Dave Schmulenson from Buffalo Grove, Il. Schmulenson interviews professional athletes and seems to build a rapport with them by “injecting humor with self-deprecation” according to his official website.
The University of Arizona Communications, Sport Management graduate created The Schmo as a fresh perspective and a new alternative to what is occurring in sports today. He refers to his genre as “sports comedy,” with an emphasis on sports first and comedy second. Schmulenson wants the humanity of the athlete to come through and he’s found humor to be an effective tool to draw out the personality from the athletes he covers.
The Schmo has interviewed some of the biggest names in MMA; Dana White, Georges St-Pierre, Tony Ferguson, Tyson Fury, and Jorge Masvidal just to name a few. His resume of jobs includes Senior Publisher Manager, Content Creator at USA TODAY Sports Media Group, Sales Assistant, Worldwide Distribution Starz Entertainment, Freelance Logger NFL Network and News Intern, Comcast SportsNet Chicago Comcast.
People in the MMA world either love or hate The Schmo. Where do you stand?
