Some boxing clubs in Ontario, Canada are re-opening their doors this week after months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Ontario, the province approved the opening of โ€œindoor and outdoor non-team sport competitions that can be played under physical distancing measuresโ€ on May 19. This only applies to Boxers and clubs who are registered with Boxing Ontario.

As of June 8, ten clubs in the province have approval to open under the Boxing Ontario COVID-19 Return to Training Regulations. For clubs returning to operation, completion of the KO-COVID โ€œReturn to Trainingโ€ seminar is mandatory before opening.

A club owner survey completed at the beginning of May revealed the possibility of the province losing up to 50% of its Boxing gyms due to COVID-19. Many of Ontarioโ€™s boxing gyms are financially devastated and will not be able to reopen while others are hanging on in hopes of getting back to business or merging clubs together.

Boxing Ontario created a COVID-19 Taskforce in order to ensure a safe return to the sport for everyone. Safety precautions and sanitary guidelines were released in a nine-page document by Boxing Canada on May 21. Some of the recommendations in the document include athlete training to be individual-based, thus prohibiting, mitt work and partner work. It also suggested that coaches wear masks during sessions, that clubs screen individuals entering for symptoms of illness and a distance of two metres should be maintained between persons.

Due to the many new rules and restrictions, it will be a different world indeed for Boxing athletes and coaches.
