Ricochet Took A Risk—And It’s Paying Off
During the summer of 2024, Ricochet informed WWE of his decision not to renew his contract, opting instead to enter free agency. This marked the end of a six-year tenure with the company, one that was filled with highs and lows.
But, ultimately it left many fans and critics feeling unfulfilled.
Leaving WWE
Ricochet’s run in WWE, when viewed in hindsight, was underwhelming. Despite his undeniable in-ring talent and athleticism, WWE never seemed to fully capitalize on his potential. Instead, he was often relegated to the role of a generic babyface, defined primarily by his high-flying ability, rather than a compelling character or engaging storylines. This creative stagnation led to skepticism about his post-WWE career, with many—including myself—questioning whether he could break free from the limitations imposed on him by his previous booking.
When Ricochet officially became a free agent, it was widely speculated that he would join All Elite Wrestling. His eventual debut with the company in August 2024 came as no surprise. But, what has been surprising is how he has managed to exceed expectations since making the jump.
A Fresh Start
Ricochet’s tenure in AEW has been a breath of fresh air, proving many doubters wrong. While his in-ring abilities were never in question, his character work and promo skills have been where he has truly shined. In WWE, he was often criticized for lacking depth on the microphone and failing to connect on an emotional level beyond his in-ring performances. However, AEW has given him the creative freedom to explore different facets of his persona. They have allowed him to showcase a range that many never knew he had.
His ongoing feud with Swerve Strickland has been a defining moment in this resurgence. Through this rivalry, Ricochet has demonstrated a newfound confidence in storytelling, seamlessly blending his athletic prowess with compelling character work. The evolution of his persona, combined with a more natural and commanding presence on the mic, has solidified his case for one of the best career revivals in recent memory.
AEW has provided Ricochet with the platform he needed to fully express himself. And he has been making the most of it. With continued growth and strong rivalries, he has the potential to become one of AEW’s top stars. His journey serves as a testament to how the right environment can unlock a wrestler’s true potential. For Ricochet, the best may still be yet to come.
