Report: Cain Velasquez arrested, tried shooting man charged with molesting family member
It looks like the motive behind the shooting Cain Velasquez was involved in has been revealed.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, Velasquez opened fire on a vehicle that was carrying a man who was recently charged with molesting a close relative of the former champion. NBC Bay Area reported that last week, sheriff’s deputies arrested 43-year-old Harry Eugene Goularte at a San Martin day care center. He’s facing charges of lewd acts with a child, but he is currently out of jail on his own recognizance without any bond.
Velasquez however, was arrested in San Jose, California on Monday night, the San Jose Police Department confirmed in a statement. Cain Velasquez is facing an attempted murder charge and is being held without bail at the Santa Clara County jail. He is set for arraignment on Wednesday.
“The motive and circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation at this time,” the statement read.
Velasquez (14-3) has long been considered among MMA’s greatest heavyweights. He went on a perfect 9-0 run, including winning the UFC heavyweight championship by defeating Brock Lesnar via first-round TKO. He stumbled in his first title defense against Junior dos Santos, but later reclaimed the belt against him in their trilogy bout.
