NXT TakeOver: New York Predictions

Read Time:5 Minute, 28 Second

One of the highlights of a big 4 WWE PPV besides the main roster show, is NXT TakeOver. Every TakeOver we say this could be the best one, but I think TakeOver: New York could legitimately be the best TakeOver card ever. This was a super hard card to predict, however, the picks are below.

Velveteen Dream (C) vs Matt Riddle – NXT North American Championship

Kicking off the card we have Velveteen Dream defending his North American Championship against the undefeated Matt Riddle. Before I get into my prediction I think this match has potential to be match of the night. Dream and Riddle are so good and while this match is being overlooked in my opinion, it will be fantastic. Now this is a tricky one to predict because Velveteen Dream just won the title, but on the other hand they may want to keep Riddle undefeated in NXT.

I think this could match could go other way and it would make complete sense. However, I think Velveteen Dream will get a sneaky win and hold on to his North American Championship. This is probably the prediction I am least comfortable with, but I think Dream retaining makes most sense. I think Dream needs the win more, and Riddle will not be hurt by the loss in anyway.

My pick for this match is Velveteen Dream to retain.

The War Raiders (C) vs Aleister Black & Ricochet – NXT Tag Team Championship

Following that we have the winners of the Dusty Classic (and my superstars of the month) Aleister Black and Ricochet facing War Raiders for the NXT Tag Team Championships. Now it was just announced that Black and Ricochet will be facing The Revival for the Raw Tag Team Championships, and I think they might win them. It seems that Black and Ricochet are officially on the main roster, and if that’s the case, there’s no way they pick up these NXT Tag Titles.

I think War Machine need this win because they haven’t had many big wins since they won the championships. Black and Ricochet have been booked so strong lately between Raw and NXT that this win doesn’t hurt them. I don’t know who War Machine will face after they win these titles, maybe Undisputed Era but nonetheless I don’t see Black and Ricochet winning here.

My pick for this match is War Machine to retain.

Pete Dunne (C) vs Walter – WWE United Kingdom Championship

Now full disclosure, I do not watch NXT UK and have only seen a few episodes, but I did see TakeOver: Blackpool. Pete Dunne has been WWE UK champion for over 680 days, and has absolutely been the center of the UK division. However, while I have nothing against WWE’s United Kingdom division, I think Pete Dunne is bigger than it. Combining that with how strong they have been booking Walter, I think he will pick up this UK title.

Dunne has carried this division on his back since he won the title, and I think it’s time he passes the torch to Walter. With that being said it would allow Pete Dunne to move on to either regular NXT or main roster, and I want him to move on from the UK division. While I wouldn’t be surprised if Dunne wins, I think it’ll be a brutal match and I think we will see a new United Kingdom Champion.

My pick for this match is Walter to become the new United Kingdom Champion.

Shayna Baszler (C) vs Kairi Sane vs Io Shirai vs Biance Belair – NXT Women’s Championship

I am going to be totally honest, this is the match I care the least about. Nonetheless, I think they have booked Shayna so strong that there is no way she’s losing this title, she has run through this division and I don’t see any of these girls taking it off of her. But that being said, it is a fatal four way so they could have her lose the title and not get pinned. I can assure you Shayna is not getting pinned here, that is a fact.

If they want to put the belt on any of the other three ladies, the pin will happen amongst those three. The fact that it is a multi-woman match leads me to think that they may have her lose the title, and have a way to keep her strong. But with 2 of the four horsewoman lurking in the shadows, I think the safe bet is that she will retain. I would love to see her lose the title on Saturday, but I will be surprised if it happens.

My pick for this match is Shayna to retain.

Johnny Gargano vs Adam Cole 2/3 Falls – NXT Championship

Then we move on to this huge main event. Now before I get into my prediction, I just want to say I can not wait for this match! This feud had to be thrown together when Ciampa had to vacate his title, and NXT has done a fantastic job building a story between the two. I am invested in the story and during their promo segment on NXT, they played their roles perfectly. Story aside, I don’t need to tell you how amazing these two are in the ring, but I’m going to anyway. These two are amazing storytellers, and their styles compliment each other extremely well. Then you add the 2/3 falls stipulation and this match has the potential to be the best match of the weekend.

As for my prediction, it is super tough because there are a lot of moving parts going into it. I think the plan here was for Gargano to beat Ciampa to culminate their rivalry. With that not being a possibility, I don’t know if they want Johnny TakeOver to pin anybody for that title that isn’t Ciampa. Gargano winning his first NXT title after the fantastic story with Ciampa by pinning Adam Cole just wouldn’t be a big enough deal. Combine that with Undisputed Era talking about wanting all the gold, I think Adam Cole wins this title.

That might be a controversial pick but I just can’t see that story ending with Gargano winning the title off of somebody other than Ciampa. This could go either way but hesitantly, I am going with Adam Cole.

My pick for this match is Adam Cole to become NXT Champion.
