My Dad is a Heel Wrestler! Review

The movie tells the story of Takashi Omura (Hiroshi Tanahashi), who was once a popular professional wrestler. He is married to Shiori and they have a son named Shota. However, Takashi and Shiori have not yet told their son that Takashi is a wrestler. One day, Shota finds out that Takashi is a wrestler and a heel named Cockroach Mask.

The movie is a heartwarming story with comedic aspects. Hiroshi Tanahashi does an excellent job in this movie as the veteran wrestler who is tired of being a heel and wanting to be a babyface once more.

Shota, portrayed by Kokoro Tereda, is the star of the movie.  Furthermore, he does a wonderful job in this film as he tries to understand his father and his feelings.

The movie can be recommended to non-wrestling fans and they will have a great time watching this film. Wrestling fans, but especially those who follow New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), will enjoy it a little bit more with all the cameos of NJPW wrestlers seen in this film.

Wrestlers that appear in this movie are:

  • Kazuchika Okada
  • Trent Baretta
  • Togi Makabe
  • Tomohiro Ishii
  • Hirooki Goto
  • Taguchi
  • KUSHIDA
  • Yuji Nagata
  • Manabu Nakanishi
  • Satoshi Kojima

The movie is based on the picture books of the same name by Masahiro Itabashi (writer) and Hisanori Yoshida (illustrator).
