MMA Moms: Janita Alvey wasn’t always smiling throughout Sam’s career

“Smilin” Sam Alvey (33-13 MMA) reached out to The Scrap to share his thanks to his mother, Janita Alvey, for her continued support in his career.

Alvey acknowledged that his mom has always been supportive of his career. “She and my dad sold almost all my tickets for my fights and they made all of my shirts. They took the orders for the shirts and distributed them too”.

Sam had his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night 47 in August of 2014, where he lost a unanimous decision to Tom Watson. The Team Quest fighter followed up the disappointing loss with three consecutive first-round finishes against Dylan Andrews, Cezar Ferreira and Daniel Kelly.

The 33-year-old UFC light heavyweight said that his mother, Janita, wasn’t always smiling when she watched him fight throughout his career.

“When I first started, she would only watch once she knew I was okay. At the beginning of my career she would just watch the video of the fight when I got home,” said Alvey. “I started being okay every fight and so she started coming to every fight.”

Today, Janita watches every one of her son’s fights from the front row and continues to show her support.
