Maycee Barber vs. Montana De La Rosa slated for UFC 269
On December 11, at the UFC 269 pay-per-view, the #13-ranked Maycee Barber will look to fend off the rising Montana De La Rosa in a pivotal flyweight matchup. News of the pairing taking place on Dec. 11 was first revealed by MMA Junkie alongside Montana De La Rosa on Instagram Live.
Barber, 23, last competed in a tough fight against Miranda Maverick. While the fight was very close, in the end, the judges ruled in favor of Barber winning by a split decision. As one of the youngest fighters on the UFC roster (7th youngest among UFC fighters) even without vast experience, Barber’s hands are a problem at flyweight.
Prior to getting in the win column against Maverick, it seemed like Barber was struggling to get comfortable with the weight class. The 23-year old fell short twice in big fights. When she was first offered a step up in competition, “The Future” took her first professional loss at the hands of Roxanne Modafferi via unanimous decision. Then, she was outworked by Alexa Grasso back at the mega event UFC 246: McGregor vs. Cerrone.
De La Rosa, 26, is on a similar path to her opponent, and also got back into her winning ways after fighting Ariane Lipski in June. De La Rosa looked better than ever, and while most are aware of her dangerous ground game, De La Rosa made it clear that she had made adequate adjustments to her striking repertoire too. By the second round, De La Rosa was able to finish the fight with vicious ground and pound and sent shockwaves through the women’s 125-pound weight class.
"I looked into her eyes and she was kind of like done after [that elbow cracked her]."
