Mason Fowler vs. Craig Jones rematch will headline SUG 17, full card announced
Submission Underground (SUG) was around long before COVID, but has taken off while COVID has wreaked havoc in the world.
SUG is one of the few combat sports promotions holding events while most of the world is on pause. The promotion announced via twitter that SUG 17 will feature a trilogy headliner between Mason Fowler and Craig Jones.

The promotion’s star, Craig Jones, looks to avenge his loss to breakout star and tournament winner, Mason Fowler. Fowler beat Jones in overtime at SUG 16. Jones immediately protested the alleged “verbal tap” that resulted in his loss, he now has the chance to run it back immediately next month.
There are some other notable matchups on the card as well. The undefeated Amanda Loewen will face Gillian Robertson as the two get another chance to face each other after their last bout fell through. Bellator’s Brent Primus takes on Richie Martinez. Primus is following suit like many MMA fighters in trying to stay active in different ways. Primus secured a win back at SUG: XIV. However, he now steps into Martinez’s world. The 10th planet representative shows off his flexibility and creativity that has become the trademark of the gym.
Jesse “JT Money” Taylor makes his SUG return and goes up against a formidable opponent in Roberto Jimenez. Taylor is a former TUF and UFC veteran. He has shifted his focus to grappling events in recent years, going back to his roots as a wrestler. Jimenez has been very active this year entering in multiple grappling tournaments, and not losing many bouts.
Nick Maximov has also been very active, really succeeding under the SUG banner. He has also been outspoken about not appreciating the overtime rules and has become one of the most entertaining figures to watch. Maximov’s goal is to finish his opponent before it comes to that, and he usually does. While, Aaron Tiegs is a purple belt, he has been training Jiu-Jitsu since his youth and will look to add another first-round win to his resume.
SUG 17 will stream live on UFC Fight Pass, August 30th. Stay tuned to The Scrap for all your SUG news and interviews.
