Josh Alexander’s Next Chapter: Where Will ‘The Walking Weapon’ End Up?

Read Time:3 Minute, 39 Second

Since announcing he was “quitting” TNA at the recent Genesis PPV, fans have been eagerly anticipating the Canadian grappler’s next move.

It has long been expected that Josh Alexander would leave TNA once his contract expired. As one of the most reliable wrestlers in the company in recent years, the former two-time IMPACT Champion is sure to attract significant interest from potential suitors.

According to Fightful, his contract expires this Saturday, February 15. Given Alexander’s talent and reputation in the industry, three potential destinations stand out as logical options for his next chapter.

WWE

It feels like a Paul Levesque-led WWE would hold significant interest in Josh Alexander, having made recent free agent signings in the Motor City Machine Guns, Penta, and Ricky Starks. WWE’s roster is as strong as ever and Alexander would be a very strong addition. At 37-years old and with six years of high-level TV experience to his name, he should go straight to the main roster and be a real player. But, there is one reason he could head to NXT.

Josh Alexander’s former tag team partner in The North, Ethan Page, has been making waves since his move to NXT. Reuniting one of TNA’s top tag teams could be the perfect way to introduce Alexander to WWE fans. Since Page is currently feuding with Je’Von Evans, Alexander’s debut could align with their match at Vengeance Day to further the storyline. Alternatively, he could arrive after the feud’s conclusion, allowing for a fresh introduction.

It raises eyebrows that Alexander never made NXT appearances throughout the last year to introduce him to the WWE audience. Especially given the success they have had with Jordynne Grace. One would think that if he was someone they held significant interest in, that he would have been showcased. Perhaps they were cautious, given the other options he will have on the table.

AEW

AEW has been aggressive in the free agent market. Names like Will Ospreay, Kazuchika Okada, and Mercedes Moné all signed with the company within the last year. While not having the name value of those three, Alexander would be a very worthwhile signing for Tony Khan. He offers something that the company doesn’t quite seem to have with his combination of size and technical style.

However, wrestlers in AEW tend to get lost in the shuffle. There are simply too many quality wrestlers signed to the company for the amount of television they have. To stand out, you do have to be a special talent. This leads to many wrestlers disappearing from TV for significant periods of time because there is simply nothing for them. There is a fear that if Josh Alexander goes to AEW, he may meet this fate despite his talent.

In a new report on February 14th, Fightful confirmed that Alexander was being repped by wrestling super agent Barry Bloom. It looks like he is currently expected to sign with AEW, if a deal already hasn’t been reached.

Japan

I’m keeping this one open ended, but of course the likely destination in Japan would be New Japan Pro Wrestling. Alexander said to Pro Wrestling Wire that competing in the NJPW G1 Climax would be his “forever goal”, and that he has a style that fits the promotion very well.

The amount of talent he could face in NJPW is near never-ending.

  • Alexander vs .Sabre Jr.
  • Alexander vs. Ishii
  • Alexander vs. Shingo

Those are just three matches that immediately wet the appetite… But after such a long run with TNA, a run here would likely be a shorter one. A return to television with one of the previously mentioned promotions down the line would likely happen shortly after.

Alexander does have history with New Japan, competing in eight matches for them between 2021 and 2023. Of course, there is a myriad of promotions in Japan. NOAH would be a great home for the Canadian as well. Of course this could end up being a destination, even if he signed with WWE given their burgeoning partnership. Japan is wide open and would provide tons of interesting opportunities should Alexander opt to head in this direction.

These are the three most obvious destinations for Josh Alexander. But, what do you think? Let us know in the comment section below.
