Jon Jones and Dominick Reyes get date set for title clash
It was only a matter of time until we got the announcement for the next UFC light heavyweight title bout. It just came down to who Jon Jones would be facing
Earlier this week it was announced that a UFC flyweight title matchup between the champion Valentina “Bullet” Shevchenko and Katlyn Chookagian would be taking place on Feb. 8 in Houston, Texas. Now we know what the second of the event’s two title bouts will be.
After an initial report from BJPenn.com’s Chris Taylor prior in the month, ESPN’s Brett Okamoto has now received confirmation from UFC president Dana White that light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (25-1) will defend his throne against the unbeaten Dominick Reyes (12-0).
As it was unaware during the Shevchenko vs. Chookagian announcement, it remains so in regards to whether or not the card will be UFC 246 or UFC 247. That reason being due to the UFC trying to work out a deal for Conor McGregor to headline a pay-per-view on January 18 Which would then equate to UFC 246. Despite that potential UFC 246 card not being made official, it currently has four fights on its lineup.

For the champion in Jones, this will be his first fight since his close battle with Thiago Santos at UFC 239 in July which resulted in a split decision in his favor. It was the first time Jones has fought to that result. “Bones” has successfully defended his title twice since recapturing it in December 2018 against Alexander Gustafsson.
His next challenger in “The Devastator” Reyes made his arrival in the UFC in June 2017 at 6-0. He’s continued his winning ways since as he’s won four of his six UFC bouts via finish (three KO/TKOs, one submission). At UFC Boston in October, Reyes picked up a big first-round knockout over former UFC middleweight king Chris Weidman.
As of right now, the UFC’s Feb. 8 card currently stands as follows.
- Light heavyweight – 205lbs: (C)Jon Jones vs Dominick Reyes
- Flyweight – 125lbs: (C)Valentina Shevchenko vs Katlyn Chookagian
- Heavyweight – 207-265lbs: Derrick Lewis vs Ilir Latifi
- Light heavyweight: Ovince Saint Preux vs Ryan Spann
- Flyweight: Andrea Lee vs Lauren Murphy
- Featherweight – 145lbs: Dan Ige vs Mirsad Bektic
- Heavyweight: Justin Tafa vs Juan Adams
