An Electrifying Title Defense
Janibek Alimkhanuly scored a devastating knockout over France’s previously undefeated contender, further cementing his status as the most avoided man in the division. He is boxing’s true middleweight boogeyman.
The first round opened with both men meeting in the center of the ring, trading combinations to the head and body. Alimkhanuly immediately established his stiff jab, following up with punishing shots that found their mark. Ngamissengue responded valiantly, attempting to match the champion’s output. Midway through the round, the action shifted into a phone booth battle on the inside. Alimkhanuly closed the round efficiently, moving backward while picking off the advancing challenger with sharp counters. A crisp left hand to the side of Ngamissengue’s head scored a knockdown late in the round. Though shaken, the challenger beat the count and continued.
The champion emphasized his sharp jab early in the second round. He picked at the challenger and controlled the distance. Similar to the first round, the two elite middleweights returned to a firefight in the center of the ring. Ngamissengue continued to press forward, absorbing gnarly punches from the hard-hitter. The challenger had his own moments of success, but he was outmatched by the champion’s superb shot selection and footwork.
Janibek continued his clinical counterpunching in the third round as he slipped the incoming combinations from Ngamissengue. The champion showed new layers in his game, as he is typically merited for his devastating punching ability. Ngamissengue showed fans that he was truly a worthy dance partner, relentlessly pressuring the champion and looking to score shots. Later in the round, the champion started prioritizing the uppercut. The challenger put together impressive combinations in the closing minute.
Ngamissengue showed signs of desperation in the fourth round. The challenger started throwing calculated pressure to the wind as he attempted to track down Alimkhanuly. This ultimately proved detrimental to the challenger’s success as the champion landed cracking counterpunches. Ngamissengue’s quality of punching dimmed with every thudding blow absorbed.
By the fifth round, Ngamissengue appeared more cautious in his approach. Abandoning his usual bursts of pressure, he adopted a high guard and looked to stay patient. Janibek’s stiff jab continued to break through the challenger’s defense. Eventually, Ngamissengue resumed his aggressive style and found moments of success, landing explosive flurries on the champion. The bout turned into an all-out slugfest past the midway point of the round. Once the chaos subsided, Janibek reestablished control, peppering Ngamissengue with jabs and slipping incoming shots.
As the two returned to the pocket, Janibek timed his moment. He ducked under Ngamissengue’s offense, fired off three quick jabs, then followed with two massive left hooks. The shots lifted the challenger off his feet and sent him crashing into the ropes. Though Ngamissengue struggled to rise and beat the count, the referee had seen enough—waving off the fight after a few labored steps.
