How UFC 251 looks after Main Event loss
UFC 251 lost its main event when Gilbert Burns tested positive for COVID-19 before flying out to Fight Island.
Fight fans are disappointed in the cancellation, but many credible sources are hinting at the possibility of Jorge Masvidal (35-13) as a replacement to face Kamaru Usman (16-1) for the welterweight title on July 11.
“Gamebred” is on a three-fight win streak and became the BMF champion when he beat Nate Diaz at UFC 244 last November in New York City. Masvidal is a 17-year veteran with 48 professional fights who started fighting in the backyards of Miami. This would be a huge opportunity for the 35-year-old if it comes to fruition. Usman only has one loss in his entire professional career which dates to 2013 at CFA 11. “The Nigerian Nightmare” lost to Jose Caceres by rear naked choke in round one in his second professional outing.
UFC 251, the first of the events on “Fight Island” will take place on July 11. The card will feature two title bouts at the moment. Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski will defend his title against Max Holloway and Petr Yan vs. Jose Aldo will take place for the vacant bantamweight title.
The main card for UFC 251 on ESPN+ pay-per-view will also feature a rematch between Jessica Andrade and Rose Namajunas, and Paige VanZant will take on surging newcomer, Amanda Ribas.
The UFC 251 prelims are stacked as well with the following fights:
– Pedro Munhoz vs. Frankie Edgar
– Jiří Procházka vs. Volkan Oezdemir
– Zhalgas Zhumagulov vs. Raulian Paiva
– Vanessa Melo vs. Karol Rosa
– Makwan Amirkhani vs. Danny Henry
– Leonardo Santos vs. Roman Bogatov
– Elizeu Zaleski vs. Muslim Salikhov
– Marcin Tybura vs. Alexander Romanov
UFC 251 will take place on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Occupying a total land area of twenty-five square kilometres, the manmade island has become the capital’s adrenaline hub. The fights will be held in a temporary structure called Flash Forum. UFC 251’s preliminary card will begin at 7pm ET and the main card is scheduled for 10pm ET.
