[EXCLUSIVE] Seven quick style tips to live by from Joseph Benavidez

Read Time:3 Minute, 22 Second

The Scrap caught up with UFC flyweight Joseph Benavidez to discuss his style, Megan Olivi, his upcoming bout against Jussier Formiga, his fashion icons, and the future of the flyweight division. Throughout the discussion, we were able to grab some style tips that Benavidez likes to live by. Whether heading to the coffee shop or fight week, Joe is one of the best dressed fighters to ever step foot in the Octagon.

Check out the dapper scrapper below.

Tip #1: “Style is individual.”

Although style will always have influences, you can always take that, use it, and make it your own. Benavidez is always dressing for the mood. Whether it’s sporty, casual or formal, Joe is put together and often finds inspiration from clothes he hasn’t worn in a while. The life of a prizefighter means constantly training, so Joe is always dressed to go to the gym. That doesn’t stop him from putting some swagger in his look though, even if he’s coming out of practice drenched in sweat.

Tip #2: “Always be true, but you have to take risks.”

Evolving with style and making custom pieces, it’s evident that Benavidez isn’t afraid to take risks with his outfits. Check out his blonde hair and yellow sweater look while signing UFC posters. Simple and sporty does the trick sometimes, especially when you have UFC obligations all day. I personally think blonde Benavidez should make his return soon. Not only did it make Benavidez stick out, he pulled it off well.

Tip #3: “Don’t adjust to impress others.”

Joe is always himself. In the Octagon, outside of it, when he dresses to go to Target or to a fashion event. He has one of the highest fight IQ in combat sports blended with creative visions. With Dapper Scrappers, Benavidez loves to showcase fighters outside of the fight game. So when checking out his Instagram feed, you’ll find that he posts more than just photos of him training.

Top #4: “Be fearless, but be comfortable in it.”

By this point, you know Joe is well put together. But know that he isn’t afraid to combine feminine accessories with his clothes. He also doesn’t care if you like it or not. Always putting new looks together and trying to pair new layers of clothing, Joe is constantly evolving his style.

Top #5: “White shirt and jeans are always in style.”

It’s classic and it’s clean. There’s nothing more to say.

Tip #6: “You always want to switch it up.”

From shoes to shirts, Joe’s outfits aren’t always randomly put together. It’s a well thought out process. At times you have to dress up and look good for the occasion. Other times, you can play it down while still looking put together. Most fighters are cutting weight while doing their media obligations, so it’s only fair to understand that not always will they look their best in front of the camera. For Joe, it’s different. It’s his time to shine so, “why not look good?”

Tip #7: “You should have different looks and open minds.”

This was my favorite. One that is t-shirt worthy. The statement says is all and truly represents Benavidez on a larger scale outside of his success in the Octagon. There’s art in both the fight and fashion game and very often do you find fighters who embody both. With an open mind and different looks, Joe has become one of the few style icons to come out of the UFC. Oh, and he’s one of the best flyweights in the world.

Make sure to check both Dapper Scrappers and Joseph Benavidez on Instagram for different styles being showcased in the fight game.
