Does WWE have too many championships?

Read Time:2 Minute, 34 Second

WWE has over 18 championships in total as of right now.

Of these 18 titles, they currently have 9 that are part of the main roster. All these championships are starting to become a booking problem on the main roster, and since the Wildcard has ended the brand split, the necessity of so many championships seems pointless at this stage for the main roster.

The Women’s Championships

The women on the main roster have 3 championships to compete for and the roster is comprised of 28 wrestlers. The roster of women is very limited to begin with, so having one main women’s championship makes sense. With one championship we won’t see the same feud repeatedly and would allow for fresh storylines to take the forefront. The women’s tag team championship, despite the bad booking, follows jumps between brands making the options for opponents more open.

The Secondary Championships

The U.S. and Intercontinental Championships have been afterthoughts in WWE for years in the opinion of some fans. Both belts have become props for weaker storylines to have something else to be excited about. WWE should consider just having one secondary championship. Having only one would make sense allowing for a more consistent booking for the remaining championship.

The World Championships

A wrestling promotion should only have one World Championship. The Universal Championship for Raw will always be in the shadow of the WWE Heavyweight Championship that is on SmackDown. The belt for SmackDown has the lineage and has far a superior design to the Universal Championship. The brand split is mostly gone at this point, so it is just a matter of when the WWE will unify these two championships again.

Doing this would also make NBC and FOX happy since both don’t care for the brand split and want access to all the stars. Having one world title would make more sense and allow the biggest stars to compete for it on both shows and networks.

The Tag Team Championships

The tag team division has 12 teams, and the teams being separated by the brand split didn’t help strengthen the championships or the division. Out of all the championships in the main roster currently has, these championships really need to be unified to help the division in more ways than one.

The competition would be raised as fans would be able to see different matchups and see the stars progress to their highest level. The WWE main roster should only have 6 championships now that the brand split is ending, and it would be the most logical thing to do. Fewer titles should force the WWE to give other stars more opportunities to develop their character and progress the story.

As of right now the WWE has no plans to unify championships any time soon, however, they should consider it.
