Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury 2 pre-fight press conference highlights
Deontay Wilder (42-0-1) met Tyson Fury (29-0-1) yesterday at a press conference in Los Angeles to discuss their heavyweight championship rematch which will take place on February 22.
The fight is set to go down at the Las Vegas MGM Grand Garden Arena. In their last outing in December 2018, Wilder and Fury fought to a 12-round split draw at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Wilder is the current WBC heavyweight champion with a stellar knockout record. Apart from Fury and Bermane Stiverne, the 34-year-old has knocked out all of his opponents or seen them retire. In his last bout in November, he knocked out Luis “King Kong” Ortiz. Wilder is currently ranked No. 10 on the BoxRec pound-for-pound list. This will be the 12th defense of Wilder’s WBC belt.
“The Bronze Bomber” said at the presser that he can’t wait for the fight. “I am always in my element and I am always in the zone. I am prepared more than ever for this fight.” Wilder continued on with the notion that in rematches he is always better than he was the first time. “The second time around, the preparation is a little bit easier because I understand what they are trying to do. Everything he wants to do, I am going to defend against”. Shelly Finko, Wilder’s manager, noted that it is a good thing that Fury has another job in WWE because Wilder is going to knock him out.
“The Gypsy King” Fury wore one of his typical outlandish suits that displayed images of him holding up the world heavyweight belts he has owned and sported a backward baseball hat. Fury said there hasn’t been a fight of this magnitude since Mike Tyson vs. Lennox Lewis.
The 31-year-old added that for the first time in his career he doesn’t need to sell a fight. “People know what they are going to get. I am going to win, that’s what I do. I am going to go out there and give him a boxing lesson and knock him out. When I get him in there again, I am going to make him feel the fury.”
The Briton has won 20 of his matches by knockout and is currently ranked No. 28 on BoxRec’s pound-for-pound rankings. Fury has a new trainer for this fight in Javan “SugarHill” Steward and has been training at Krong Gym for the rematch. The fight contract includes a rematch clause where the loser can invoke a trilogy fight if he chooses.
