Could Vince Russo ever return as a Pro Wrestling writer?
One of the biggest “What Ifs” in the world of pro wrestling is a potential return of Vince Russo writing wrestling again. There are several factors that makes this unlikely to happen in the near future, and very few that make it possible…
Sometimes, Your Reputation Follows You
One of the main reasons that make it impossible for Russo to return to his role is the death of WCW and the downfall of TNA. Those two events will be part of Russo’s legacy as much as the positive aspects were. It doesn’t help his case that his name is often considered a joke in today’s industry.
Russo’s style of writing was basically if Jerry Springer booked wrestling shows. While it created fun TV to watch at the time, with the eyes of 2022, that type of writing wouldn’t fit today. Especially because of how much things in society and pop culture have changed. Unfortunately, Vince Russo is not as connected to the casual fans as he once was. There’s also the fact that he wouldn’t be working with generational talents like The Rock and Steve Austin. They were without a doubt instrumental to Russo’s success.
It’s 2022…
Another major problem for his return, would be that he is stuck in the late 90’s regarding pop culture and wrestling ideas. As a society, we have changed a lot since the late 90’s and the Attitude Era. The ideas that worked then will not work now. No one will want to take the risk of working with someone stuck in the past. The era of the work-shoot stories is over and today’s fans just don’t want that.
Vince Russo has made it no secret he is not really a fan of wrestlers outside of the U.S. and even for that matter, he isn’t a fan of actual pro wrestling. There are several episodes of TNA under his writing with very little wrestling in it. Today’s fans care more about the in-ring work than ever before, and this would clash with Russo’s writing style. Wrestling’s borders are more open than ever, and Russo would feel lost with that.
The problem for Russo is the fact that wrestling has evolved, but he never did… A comeback would be unlikely and no promotion is interested in having in him as a writer (or in any role).
