Chris Jericho to challenge for the IWGP Championship at Dominion
Last night at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s “Dontaku,” a vignette played where Chris Jericho challenged The Rainmaker for the IWGP Championship at Dominion on June 9th.
Okada had just defeated Sanada, and was cutting a promo afterwards talking about his reign. He said he was going to keep making it rain, and was cut off by a video package. Jericho appeared in his usual horror movie-esque attire, and called himself “The Painmaker”.
The camera cut back to Okada who had a worried look on his face, and the match is set.
This is interesting for a couple reasons, but one very big one. May 25th, Jericho takes on Omega at Double or Nothing and is signed to All Elite Wrestling. So this begs the question, what is the relationship between AEW and New Japan? Either All Elite’s contracts allow talent to work in other companies, or the All Elite and New Japan have some kind of working relationship.
Either way, I love this match and it adds another layer to the story since Jericho takes on Kenny later this month.
