Bob Arum believes Anthony Joshua will retire in 2020
Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum Predicts AJ’s Retirement
Two-time unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has been in the mix to be considered for the best heavyweight boxer. His name has been recognized in the scene for a long time now. After 2019 being filled with ups and downs AJ was able to regain his WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO world titles. Now, the word is that AJ will retire by the end of 2020, especially if he loses his next bout. At least according to Bob Arum.
Bob Arum Shares Opinion of Anthony Joshua’s Career
Top Rank official Bob Arum recently stated that AJ would retire if he were to face Tyson Fury. Obviously, the fight would take place later down the line as both men are currently booked in world title matches. Fury is slated to take on Deontay Wilder while AJ will more than likely face Kubrat Pulev.
Also, Arum is the promoter of Fury and his career. So, while he believes in the “Gypsy King” fans can better understand the vested bias within the comments. The legendary promoter spoke with the Express UK, where he clarified his comments.
“I’m going to make a big prediction here. (Next year} there will be no more Joshua,” said Arum. “Everybody is overlooking that Bulgarian who has been training his a** off in my gym. Let me tell you he’s not coming in fat like Andy Ruiz. He’s going to pressure Joshua and he can knock Joshua out,” finished Arum.
Joshua vs. Pulev
Pulev is no slouch. With a 28-1 record, he possesses massive power with 14 knockouts. In fact, “The Cobra” is currently riding an 8 fight win streak. That string of victories will more than likely set up the matchup between Pulev and AJ. Especially because Kubrat is the mandatory IBF title-challenging contender.
Bob Arum’s Beef with AJ
Keep in mind, the matchup has never been made official. And, Arum has been known to say ridiculous things about Joshua. While the verdict is still out on who AJ will face next, it’s safe to say that eventually down the line, he will have to face Tyson Fury.
Joshua may have folded when he lost to Andy Ruiz Jr. However, he reclaimed his glory as well as his titles when the pair rematched in Saudi Arabia. If AJ was able to make it through that moment, another loss probably wouldn’t result in retirement.
However, crazier things have happened in the sport of boxing. However, we’ll leave those crazy stories for another time.
