Anthony Pettis Fighting Championship kicked off its 2025 season with three professional title fights headlining APFC 16. The event took place on Sunday, March 23, at the Potawatomi Casino Event Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Lightweight Championship Main Event

Mark Choinski (C) vs. John Ramirez

The main event of the night featured the undefeated lightweight champion, Mark Choinski (8-0), defending his title against the experienced challenger, John Ramirez (8-8).

The fight began with Choinski taking control, moving toward the center of the cage and changing levels, forcing Ramirez to second-guess his next move. Ramirez, showing patience, set up a leaping left hand down the middle. Choinski absorbed the punch well but started to retreat to avoid further damage. Ramirez landed the same punch twice more, finding the target each time. Choinski circled away, then used a well-timed knee to the face after framing Ramirez.

Ramirez, becoming too aggressive, overextended on the feet, allowing Choinski to level change and secure a takedown. The champion quickly found himself in Ramirez’s guard, where the two fighters remained for over a minute. Choinski began working from the top, landing strikes through Ramirez’s guard before transitioning into half-guard. From there, Choinski continued to land punches to both the head and body.

Eventually, Choinski moved to full mount, forcing Ramirez to give up his back. Choinski flattened Ramirez as he attempted to rise, then began landing slicing elbows to the side of Ramirez’s head. Moments later, Choinski locked in a rear-naked choke, putting Ramirez to sleep and securing the victory.

Result: Mark Choinski via 1st-Round Submission (Rear Naked Choke)

Flyweight Championship Co-Main Event

Cody Linne vs. Austin Hall

Flyweight contenders clashed for the APFC title as the battle-tested Cody Linne (9-3) faced undefeated submission artist Austin Hall (5-0).

Hall came out strong, charging across the cage with punches to set up a takedown. He quickly dumped Linne to the ground, landing elbows and punches. Linne attempted to defend with up kicks but struggled to gain any real success. However, he managed to work his way back to the cage. Eventually he got to his feet, where Hall landed a high kick on his guard. Linne raised his guard to defend as Hall relentlessly searched for openings to land strikes. Hall shot in for another takedown, and although Linne threatened with a guillotine, Hall showed composure and escaped. Linne then transitioned to an armbar, but Hall slammed him on his head, returning to ground control.

Round two saw more striking, with Hall landing sharp kicks to Linne’s legs and head. After a minute, Hall’s wrestling returned to the forefront, securing another takedown. While Linne was down, Hall landed an illegal knee to the head, but the referee didn’t penalize him. The action resumed with a flurry of punches before Hall used his wrestling again to control Linne. Linne threatened with a guillotine, reversing a takedown attempt. But, Hall quickly regained top control and ended the round on Linne’s back.

In the third round, Hall shot in for another takedown, but Linne landed a hard knee to the body. Hall’s wrestling paid off as he lifted Linne and dumped him to the ground. From there, Hall unleashed ground and pound, while Linne showed urgency in getting back to his feet. Hall controlled the pace, securing another takedown and avoiding Linne’s submission threats. Linne did manage to lock in a mounted guillotine, but Hall escaped quickly. The final moments saw a grappling exchange, with Hall maintaining control to close out the fight and keep his undefeated record intact.

Result: Austin Hall via Unanimous Decision (30-27 x3)

Middleweight Championship

Jon Kunneman vs. Matt Friesen

The first championship bout of the evening featured an exciting middleweight clash. Undefeated prospect Jon Kunneman (10-0) took on seasoned MMA veteran Matt Friesen (8-3).

Kunneman opened the fight strong, quickly securing a takedown and moving into full mount. From there, he began raining down punches before transitioning to an arm triangle choke. Friesen fought back, landing strikes to Kunneman’s body in an attempt to escape. Kunneman initially struggled to finish the submission, but he returned to full mount, maintaining the choke. Friesen ultimately had no choice but to tap out, giving Kunneman the submission victory.
