What are the biggest MMA fights to make right now?
There his no better time to be a MMA fan than today. With the sport in the limelight and multiple promotions outside the UFC succeeding, things are starting to get interesting. There are phenomenal cards just about every week now and with so many names to keep an eye on it’s hard to keep up.
Below are the biggest fights UFC and Bellator could make right now.
AJ McKee vs. Patricio Pitbull 2
This one seems like a no brainer, especially after AJ McKee’s dominant win to capture the Bellator featherweight championship. If I’m Pitbull, I don’t take this fight. But it would be interesting if Bellator were to make it, especially since McKee does have a clause in his contract. AJ will have to defend his new featherweight title so we know he will be in Bellator for a few more fights before he can go elsewhere.
Does the weight play into Pitbull’s favor? Or will the fact AJ not having to cut as much weight makes him even more powerful? Either or, it’s a fight that will eventually have to happen while the rest of the division plays itself out. The Grand Prix made it so there really is no clear number 1 contender for McKee.
Francis Ngannou vs. Ciryl Gane
This may be one of the obvious choices, but it has potential to be one of the biggest fights in UFC heavyweight history. They have the perfect backstory heading into the fight and their skillets, should they clash, have the ability to make it an interesting one for fight fans. We’re not sure what’s going to happen with Ngannou and his fight for more pay. But we do hope the UFC figures it out because this is a fight that fans want to see this year.
Gane’s run in the heavyweight division has been extremely impressive. Still undefeated since his transition to MMA, he will be Ngannou’s biggest test to date. Should he win the fight against Francis, he’ll become the first undisputed UFC champion from France.
Kayla Harrison vs. Cris Cyborg
This is without a doubt one of the biggest fights you can make in WMMA. After demolishing the PFL talent for two seasons now, Kayla Harrison has proven that she is one of the best fighters in the world. Finish after finish, one starts to wonder if Harrison can make a run in the UFC or Bellator. Though she still has two fights left, if she wants to compete in a real featherweight division, Bellator is the place to go.
Cris Cyborg is likely defending her title soon, however, since leaving the UFC there really isn’t anyone that has shown they can hang with one of the greatest to ever do it. Enter Kayla Harrison. Cris never got the Ronda fight she wanted, but Kayla has been asking for her. And she seems rather confident in her abilities if the two were to ever meet in the cage. It’s the perfect next fight for both women once Kayla becomes a 2x PFL lightweight champion and Cyborg successfully defends her belt.
Conor McGregor vs. Jorge Masvidal
This is the real money fight. And what a perfect time for it to happen too with both Conor McGregor and Jorge Masvidal coming off back-to-back loses. McGregor/Diaz 3 will always be there, and it seems that most fans don’t want to see McGregor/Poirier 4, despite the ongoing rivalry. So why not do something a bit different and have “Gamebred” defend his BMF belt? It would be fireworks.
Could you imagine the press conference leading up to this clash? It would be one for the history books and would have potential to break every PPV record with the right undercard. Let’s hope the MMA Gods bless us once McGregor is healed up and ready to return.
Sean O’Malley vs. Chito Vera 2
Every popular UFC fighter needs an interesting feud to help build the story behind their future Hollywood film. Ronda Rousey had Miesha Tate, Jon Jones had Daniel Cormier, Anderson Silva had Chael Sonnen, Kamaru Usman has Colby Covington, and the bantamweight division just got a new one after Sean O’Malley and Chito Vera first fought.
Though Chito may fight Frankie Edgar next, a win for the Ecuadorian will put him in the perfect position to eventually re-welcome a fight with O’Malley. This time with much more on the line, including a higher ranking. Fans definitely want to see what would happen if the two meet again, so it’s a no-brainer future matchup.
Charles Oliveira vs. Dustin Poirier
Another obvious choice here, but we’re excited nonetheless. Can Dustin Poirier fulfill his dream off becoming the undisputed lightweight champion? Or does Charles Oliveira play spoiler yet again? This is a matchup that fight fans are eager to have announced and there is no bigger fight to make at lightweight right now.
TJ Dillashaw vs. Jose Aldo
Every fan in the world wants to see this epic clash between legends happen ASAP, especially with Jose Aldo now fighting at bantamweight. It could headline a Fight Night or be on a main card for any off the upcoming PPVs.
Aldo has looked phenomenal at 135 pounds. The change in weight has revitalized his career, and fighting for the title will further cement him in MMA history. Eventually, he’ll have too fight TJ to get there. Though some fans may not be happy about Dillashaw’s return, a win over Cory Sandhagen looks very good on his resume. It immediately put him in the title picture… But why rush to the top? Sure there is much time loss to be made up, but Dillashaw has so many exciting fights lined up he could make that don’t include the winner of Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling. Aldo should be at the top of TJ’s list. For legacy, baby.
