Three bantamweights that could fill in to fight Trevin Jones
MMA Island recently took to Twitter and announced that Tony Kelley is out of his fight against Trevin Jones at UFC on ESPN 27. The bantamweight scrap was set to take place on July 24th, on a card headlined by Cory Sandhagen and the returning TJ Dillashaw.
The plan is for Jones to remain on the card, replacement pending. As per reports, the Guam Native will remain on the card until the promotion finds an opponent. Below are the three bantamweight prospects most deserving of the short notice UFC call-up.
Zviad Lazishvili
Although Zviad Lazishvili last fought in September of last year, he claimed the LFA bantamweight championship while remaining perfect. Undefeated at 12-0, it’s hard to understand why he hasn’t gotten the call-up already. It’s a no-brainer at this point, Lazishvili has only gone the distance three times in his career, finishing the other nine within two rounds.
It’s only a matter of time until the big promotions start calling. Hopefully it’s sooner, rather than later for Zviad.
Justin Wetzell
Another no-brainer signing would be Team Elevation prospect, Justin Wetzell (7-1) after his big win at LFA 109. Wetzell took out former UFC signee, Askar Askar with ease, winning the fight by TKO in the second round. The DBZ scouter wearing bantamweight has another two wins under the LFA banner, going undefeated fighting on UFC Fight Pass.
He’s a training partner for Cory Sandhagen, who headlines the card. Why not bring in one of the guys he trusts enough to bring on during camp? Whether it’s now or later, Wetzell is big league ready.
SAIDYOKUB KAKHRAMONOV
Another fighter with a win over Askar Askar (undefeated at the time) is the tough Saidyokub Kakharamonov. At just 25 years old, he holds an 8-2 record with his last win taking place under the CFFC banner. Finishing his last three opponents within the first two rounds, Kakharamonov also seems like a logical choice for the call-up.
He may be young, but he does not lack experience. Or cage time. He knows how to finish a fight and at the end of the day, that’s what UFC matchmakers want to see. Kakharamonov is a name we’ll likely see more of in the near future.
