Anthony Romero is 'ready for the big show,' still focused on UFC

With most gyms still on lockdown in Ontario, Canada, professional MMA fighter Anthony “The Genius” Romero (9-0) isn’t putting his training on hold. Ontario has been under strict lockdown rules as of December 26. This has put a huge damper on MMA training and on all sports in general, in the province.

Leave it to “The Genius” to come up with a solution. Still a young fighter, the 23-year-old asked his parent’s permission to turn the family’s garage into a home gym.

It only took an idea to get things started. His father, younger brother and sister happily got on the task along with him installing drywall and insulation. It took a few weeks to come together, but now it’s a place Romero says he would be lost without. “It’s efficient and reliable. I’m filling it with equipment that I need for training and it’s only steps from my house”. It’s a refuge for the Niagara Top Team fighter where he can spend hours training and preparing for his dream of making it to the UFC.

“I’ve got a dream to accomplish. I’m going to make it to the UFC. 2020 was supposed to be my year. I was scheduled to go on The Contender Series in the summer and everything was going great. COVID hit which cancelled a lot of events and made it difficult to train. I didn’t get the contract on the Contender Series after my win over Mike Breeden. I am still focused on my goal more than ever and no matter what, I will get there”.

Hopefully the UFC keeps 🇨🇦 Anthony Romero on standby for a short notice fight. I dont agree with the lack of experience argument having 8 fights. Might end up being an Austin Vanderford situation where its Bellator MMA gain #DWCS

Romero had a dominant unanimous decision win over Breeden with leg kicks for days. He was denied the contract by Dana White saying that he should have finished his opponent. Romero said it was difficult to be let down after the win. “I’m ready for the big show. My perfect record speaks for itself. I went on to beat Zach Juusola at LFA 96 in December. I’m still working towards my goal. I just have to be patient and stay on my path. I’ll get there”.
