The Wildcard: Michael Chandler could shake up the lightweight division
For years the UFC has been set on a pedestal as the number one mixed martial arts promotion globally. With undefeated lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov announcing his retirement, this now leaves the stacked UFC lightweight division without a champion.
Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje are names that immediately jump out as contenders who could possibly fill the vacant role as lightweight champion. However, multiple time Bellator lightweight champion, Michael Chandler is one of the UFC’s most recent signings and is bringing new diversity to the weight class.
With Chandler now in the picture as a legitimate title contender, the lightweight division is even more shaken up than ever before. Chandler has never fought in the UFC octagon; however, he has victories over two former UFC lightweight champions, Eddie Alvarez and Benson Henderson. Chandler could possibly break through as a legitimate title contender with only a few victories inside of the UFC octagon. He truly has never received the credit he rightfully deserves.
Chandler’s extensive skill set and impressive resume can lead him to possibly becoming a UFC Champion. He is rumoured to face UFC veteran Dan Hooker as the co-main event at UFC 257 in January. As of now, both Chandler and Hooker verbally agreed to the bout and a formal announcement is expected soon.
Fighting as the co-main to former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor grants Chandler an opportunity to become a possible title contender with a win over Dan Hooker.
