Is Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr. inevitable or preventable?

For the first time since his dangerous car crash in 2019, Errol Spence Jr. will make his return to the ring this Saturday, December 5. The WBC and IBF Welterweight Champion will be defending his titles against Danny Garcia, a former champion in his own right. It is a moment Spence will never forget, win or lose, after his career almost ended last October.
There are plenty of questions heading into the fight, like what will the mindset of Spence be? Another question is simple: what is next for Spence if he can get past Garcia? The world has been clamoring for a Spence vs. Terence Crawford unification bout, pitting two friends against one another. Now, it might just be a fight that could never come to fruition.
A few weeks ago, Terence Crawford returned in glorious fashion with a TKO win over Kell Brook. The WBO Welterweight Champion shook off the ring rust to prove he is the best boxing has to offer. Several opponents could face “Bud”, but only two are worth investing ourselves in. Crawford can face Manny Pacquiao in a fight that would put the past against the present. He could also face Spence. If Crawford had a say, however, he would much rather face the former.
Not long ago, Crawford and Spence were calling one another out on social media. The former would end up stating to Chris Mannix that he FaceTimed Spence looking to schedule a fight, saying he would take Spence down. Crawford recently backtracked, however, and stated on the Ak and Barak Show that he is over looking into fighting Spence.
“A fight with Errol is not that important to me,” Crawford stated, via World Boxing News. “I don’t need him for my legacy. I don’t know why people say I need him. He needs me.”
It appears that Crawford isn’t the only one who feels that way.
Spence, who last fought in September 2019 against Shawn Porter in a Fight of the Year candidate, also seemed to dismiss a fight with Crawford. Speaking with Jake Asman on SportsMap Radio, Spence didn’t even want to think about him.
“Right now I’m not thinking about that. I got Danny Garcia… I could give a damn about Terence Crawford,” Spence would state. “It doesn’t matter if we fight or we don’t fight. I don’t need him, so what’s the point of fighting, right?
When asked about fans saying he’s ducking Crawford, Spence said the same thing could be said about Crawford. He would also let the fans fight one another on that while he worries about what’s going on now.
In reality, Top Rank’s Bob Arum would prefer a Crawford-Pacquiao fight, as there were plans to get it done in Qatar. While both promotions have done business before, there may be issues booking a Spence-Crawford fight given the fact that Premier Boxing Champions and Top Rank would have to work a few things out.
Regardless, both fighters are tired of hearing all the talking heads stating one thing over another, and just want to compete. Whether that is against one another is up in the air.
While the two may be saying they don’t need the fight, boxing in general might. A bout pitting two young stars is something that can help lift the sport during a time of uncertainty. Could they just be playing a game of cat and mouse until an announcement is made? Only time will tell, as everything is on hold as we await the results of an important title fight this weekend in Texas.
