Breaking Down Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr.

Read Time:3 Minute, 6 Second

For the first time in over 15 years, “Iron Mike” is back!

Mike Tyson will step inside a boxing ring in the best shape of his post-fighting life to take on Roy Jones Jr. Inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Two former champions will look to entertain potentially millions of viewers. On the line will be the newly-created WBC Frontline Battle Belt. A bout for charity, both fighters have something to prove in their own way.

Despite both fighters being the competitors that they are, the unpredictability of the fight due to the always-changing rules will be one of the main reasons to watch the fight.

In an eight-round fight, there will only be two minutes to each round. Just like women’s fights within the sport, that could dramatically hinder Tyson’s signature power. The fighters will use 12-ounce gloves without protection, and the California Athletic Commission is under the impression that there will be no knockouts. A remote scoring system will be used even if a true winner won’t be guaranteed. Based on all of that, a draw won’t be out of the question.

Who has the edge in a fight that is entertaining in multiple ways?

The DraftKings Sportsbook has Tyson as a -235 favorite against Jones, who is at +175. Meanwhile, Bovada has Tyson as a -225 favorite with Jones the +175 underdog. A majority of the media and fans are perplexed that there still is a betting opportunity, due to the nature of how the contest has been structured.

One of the most dominant heavyweight champions of his era, Tyson, 54, made his professional debut in 1985. He quickly rose up the ranks in the boxing world due to his tremendous power. Tyson knocked out Trevor Berbick in the second round of their fight in 1986, his 28th pro fight, to win the WBC Heavyweight Title. By doing so, he became the youngest world heavyweight champion at 20. Tyson has 44 wins via knockout and has beaten the likes of Larry Holmes, Marvis Frazier, Michael Spinks, and Tyrell Biggs.

Following his loss to Buster Douglas in 1990, Tyson’s career took an interesting turn. Arrests and controversial results (the Evander Holyfield series) are just a few examples. His last fight was a loss at the hands of Kevin McBride in 2005, ending his career with a 1-3 record. Now, thanks to stem cell research and training with Kings MMA’s Rafael Cordeiro, Tyson looks as dangerous as ever.

For Jones, 51, this is a fight that is years in the making. Jones won the IBF Middleweight Title in 1993 against Bernard Hopkins. “Captain Hook” would end up winning light-heavyweight gold following a move and became the first middleweight champion to win heavyweight gold in 2003. Beating John Ruiz in 2003 for the heavyweight title, Jones made history. He was able to extend his career up until 2018, where he maintained a four-fight win streak.

Jones’ recent activity could give him an advantage in the fight. He has even been training with Chris Eubank Jr. to keep him in shape. One should never count out Tyson, however. He has gone on record as saying he won’t be able to control himself. While the commission is expecting this to be a hard-hitting sparring session, both are ready for anything.

The main card of Tyson vs. Jones begins at 9pm ET, with music company Triller being the distributor of the bout. All eyes will be on this fight, as nostalgia and curiosity will take over doubt. Even if no true winner is announced, the boxing world in general will be the one to have a significant advantage today.
