VIDEO: Josh Hill sees Bellator bantamweight title shot in his near future
Canadian bantamweight “Gentleman” Josh Hill (20-3) is celebrating his second win in the Bellator cage.
The 33-year-old won a unanimous decision over Erik “Goyito” Perez (19-8) at Bellator 244 on August 21. Hill previously beat Vinicius “The Little Devil” Zani (11-6) at Bellator 239 in February 21 also by unanimous decision.
When Hill spoke with Behind The Grind about his recent fight, he praised his opponent. “Perez has been around a long time and did very well in the UFC and Combate. He did a good job of evading a lot of my punches and whatnot. I got to showcase striking, wrestling, grappling. There was a bit of everything in that fight and my cardio”.
With two unanimous decisions under his belt, “The Gentleman” said there will always be people on the sidelines critiquing fighters’ actions in the cage. “People can say whatever they want, they aren’t the ones that are in there. Everybody is going to criticize you no matter what. I’ve had fights where I’ve gone in and won in two minutes and people complained because the fight wasn’t long enough”.
Hill spoke of the special relationship he has with his coach Lyndon Whitlock. “We’ve known each other since grade five. We played hockey together growing up, we went to the same school and he brought me into MMA training. We were training partners and now he’s my coach. Nobody knows me more in the sport than him. You have to be able to trust the person you are with. He knows me as a fighter and a person so I can trust his judgement”. Whitlock also fought as a professional. He retired in 2016 and now trains fighters out of Para Bellum MMA in Oakville, Ontario.
Hill said he’s enjoyed fighting in the Bellator promotion. “I love it. I’m a big fan. I love the direction they are going as an organization. They have a very deep bantamweight division. I see myself in the top four right now in my mind. I see myself fighting for the title some time in 2021”.
