VIDEO: Greg Fischer chats LFA title fight and hopeful UFC future

Greg Fischer (10-1) will battle Jimmy Flick (13-5) at LFA 86 on July 24 on UFC Fight Pass for the LFA flyweight championship. We caught up with Fischer from Albuquerque, New Mexico as he took a break from training at the famed JacksonWink MMA Academy.

Fischer explained who he has been working with at JacksonWink and the benefits he has been getting at one of the most well known MMA gyms in the world.

“This is the first camp I have worked with [Coach Mike Winkeljohn],” Fischer told The Scrap, “I’ve been coming here for a while, and its a lot of people coming here so it’s hard to get the coach’s attention but Wink started doing pads with me. Really one of my favorite coaches here is Harry St. Ledger, he’s a great grappling coach, wrestling coach, and he’s been helping me for years so I like coming here and working with him and getting some training partners.”

Fischer is one of the brightest prospects in the country with a stellar record of 10-1, we asked him how he got his start in MMA. “I started as a fan, when I was in high school, probably even before high school. I was just a big fan of martial arts and watching it on TV. I wrestled in middle school, high school, even before I started wrestling, I watched it with my dad who liked Georges St-Pierre a lot, and it just kind of transitioned from there.”

Like most mixed martial artists, Fischer dreams of one day fighting in the UFC. We asked him how far away he feels he is from getting a call up to the big show.

“According to my manager they have pitched me like four or five times now and for whatever reason, I don’t get that shot,” he explained, “It always seems like people who get the call are already under contract and that makes sense that they give a short-notice fight to someone who is already under contract rather than signing someone new.

“But a couple of times they have signed new people and I don’t know what’s making them take those people over me. I know I’m right there cause I’m getting those calls, you’d think probability I’d get that call but it hasn’t worked out yet.”

Fischer knows in order to get that call to the UFC he has to keep winning. Next up is the grizzled veteran in Flick. Fischer is fully aware that this won’t be an easy fight. Fischer explained his thoughts on this title fight.

“I feel like my hand is gonna be raised at the end of it, and I know he feels like his hand will be raised so I guess you’ll just have to tune into Fight Pass to find out.”
