Is Conor McGregor vs. Jorge Masvidal ‘super necessary’?
Prior to UFC 246 and the return of Conor McGregor, there were a lot of questions surrounding his future. “The Notorious” answered a lot of those questions by dispatching of UFC legend Donald Cerrone in just 40 seconds.
Now that McGregor is back to his winning ways, one question remains … who’s next? The possibilities are endless. From the rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov to Justin Gaethje, to Nate Diaz, to even Floyd Mayweather.
However, in my mind, there is one choice for McGregor’s next fight and that’s Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal.
McGregor and Masvidal have been linked to one another since before the UFC 246 event. In July 2019 while talking about McGregor, UFC President Dana White shot down the idea of the fight. White claimed McGregor was “too small” for Masvidal, whose stock has risen exponentially since.
This plot thickened on January 18 when McGregor defeated Cerrone at 170-pounds – the same weight of Masvidal. McGregor said all fight week that he felt good at the weight and was under the limit for most of the fight week.
In the weeks and days leading to the fight, there were a lot of questions about how McGregor would look back at welterweight. McGregor had previously fought twice in the division. Both times were when he fought the aforementioned Diaz.
To put it lightly, McGregor made a statement at UFC 246 as he put on a flawless performance. In my eyes, this perfectly sets up a super fight of Masvidal vs. McGregor.
It is no secret that the Irishman wants the lightweight title back and the winner of Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson in April. However, after his showing at UFC 246, he made it clear that he was interested in the fight with Masvidal. Masvidal has also expressed heavy interest. The fighters want it, the fans want it, for the UFC … this is the fight to make. I would argue that this fight is just as big as the McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov rematch and would be fireworks.
We’ve seen that Masvidal can throw bombs, McGregor is a knockout artist, this is a dream fight! There is no denying that there are a plethora of options for the sport’s biggest star but this one makes the most sense.
If McGregor loses, he goes back to lightweight to challenge the winner of the upcoming title bout. If McGregor wins, he still challenges for the lightweight championship but his options somehow expand even greater.
To answer the question; yes, McGregor vs. Masvidal is #SuperNecessary.
