Colby Covington makes controversial comments about Matt Hughes, Hughes responds
Colby Covington went into UFC Newark and did what he said he was going to do. In the main event, he was taking on a UFC legend, and former welterweight champion, Robbie Lawler.
“Chaos” applied his insane pressure and cardio, throwing over 500 strikes in the fight. He took Lawler down at will, who has been known to have insane takedown defense. Not only that, but when he kept the fight standing, it was he who got the better of strikes and even cut “Ruthless”.
Ultimately, Lawler had no answer for Covington’s pressure, wrestling, and striking, losing the fight by unanimous decision, as the former interim welterweight champion had won every round on each judge’s scorecards.
Then, after the fight, during Colby’s post-fight interview with Jon Anik inside the Octagon, he made a controversial statement. There, he took a shot at Matt Hughes, a UFC legend and one of Lawler’s friends.
“Let’s talk about the lesson we learned here tonight. It’s a lesson Robbie Lawler should have learned from Matt Hughes. You stay off the track when the train is coming through,” he said.
Obviously, Hughes was involved in a train accident in June of 2017 that left him seriously hurt. He suffered head trauma and lifelong injuries, where he struggled to walk and speak. Many fans, fighters, and media alike all thought “Chaos” had crossed the line, but the Hall of Famer was quick to respond to him on Instagram.
Matt Hughes’ Response
Matt Hughes continues to be a class act as he recovers from this traumatic injury. Even though Colby Covington may have crossed the line, he did not take it personally and instead congratulated the former interim champ on his dominating performance.

With the win, it sets up Colby Covington to fight Kamaru Usman later this year, and possibly in Madison Square Garden which both have said is a good timeframe. When that fight happens, it will no doubt be one of the biggest fights of the year as the two do not like each other, and the bad blood has been there for quite some time.
Regardless, Colby Covington continues to play the bad guy role as evident by his post-fight speech.
