Joseph Benavidez has been more than deserving of title shot
Joseph Benavidez’s record speaks for itself; 28 wins with only 5 losses, 1 KO of the Night and 3 Performances of the Night bonuses.
On paper that is the record of a champion, but Benavidez has never claimed UFC gold. He has been fighting at flyweight for 7 years, yet has only had two shots at championship gold. Both times losing to one of the greatest of all-time, Demetrious Johnson.
The Mouse Trap
His first fight against DJ was the finals of a tournament at UFC 152 for the inaugural flyweight championship. It was a close split decision. In his second encounter nearly a year later in 2013, the fight ended by KO. Their first encounter was an extremely close fight that could’ve gone either way, and the rematch was close until DJ got the KO in round 1.
After winning 9 of his 10 fights since his last title shot, Benavidez has more than deserved a third shot at the former king of flyweight. With Johnson at ONE, it’s time Benavidez gets the next shot at the Henry Cejudo’s flyweight championship.
Interestingly enough one of those ten fights is a win over current Cejudo. Triple C only has two losses in his UFC career, one against Benavidez and one against “Might Mouse.”
Henry Cejudo Should Avenge His Loss
As we know, Cejudo would avenge the loss to DJ at UFC 227 in August of 2018. With Cejudo not fighting since June, many ask the question, “Why has he not avenged the other loss on his record?”
Benavidez is coming off a dominant win against Jussier Formiga. He is the only option for the next flyweight shot. Dana White has said he thinks this fight is next, Benavidez think’s it’s next, so where is Henry?
Cejudo is holding up the division and has two options in my mind, defend or vacate. Whether he defends or vacates, there is one man Dana should call on next: Joey Vegas himself. Not only is he a pioneer of the division, he’s on a three-fight win streak with two being finishes. Benavidez has not been given enough credit, and has not been given the championship opportunity he deserves.
Henry Cejudo has one loss left to avenge, so what’s he waiting for?
