During the broadcast of UFC 311, John Anik delivered exciting news for MMA fans. Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen will serve as the coaches for the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter. The announcement was made on the same night that Craig Piligian, the creator of TUF, was selected as a member of the 2025 UFC Hall of Fame class.

TUF 33: A New Chapter

Season 33 of The Ultimate Fighter will showcase male flyweight and welterweight fighters competing in the series’ signature tournament format. As is tradition, 16 contestants will move to Las Vegas, live under one roof, and train under the guidance of two UFC fighters. This time around, it will be UFC legends. Hall of Famers Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen being announced as the coaches was a surprise. The season is definitely shaping up to be must-watch television for fight fans.

The casting call ran from November 4 to December 18, 2024, with finalists expected to have been chosen in January 2025. TUF 33 is scheduled to premiere on May 27th.

Chael Sonnen: A TUF Veteran

Chael Sonnen is no stranger to The Ultimate Fighter, having previously appeared as both a coach and a contestant. Known for his sharp wit and unparalleled trash talk, he has a track record of delivering memorable moments on the show.

TUF: Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen

Sonnen first coached on The Ultimate Fighter: Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen, where he went head-to-head with then-Light Heavyweight Champion, Jon Jones. Despite criticism over his coaching appointment—largely due to his lack of recent competition in the division—Sonnen helped make the season engaging with his charisma and strategic mind.

TUF Brazil 3

Sonnen later coached on TUF Brazil 3, facing off against Brazilian MMA legend, Wanderlei Silva. This season featured intense rivalry moments, including a now-iconic obstacle course challenge. While Sonnen won the challenge, Silva dismissed the victory as meaningless, further escalating tensions. The animosity between the two culminated in several confrontations. Including the moment that gave fans the legendary “I can’t let you get close”.

What To Expect From TUF 33

With Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen at the helm, fans can expect not only expert coaching. But also, plenty of drama and humor. Cormier, known for his analytical mind and affable personality, is the perfect counterbalance to Sonnen’s sharp tongue and unpredictable energy.

Both coaches are now retired and on good terms. But their competitive spirits and love for the sport will undoubtedly shine through. Viewers can look forward to “holy shit” moments and meme-worthy interactions. But most importantly, a showcase of the next generation of UFC talent.
