The season premiere of Monday Night Raw on Netflix showcased the strong connection between professional wrestling and pop culture at the highest level.

From Travis Scott walking out with Jey Uso to Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias’s segment with The New Day backstage, the number of celebrities attending the highly anticipated debut on Netflix was impressive.

Throughout WWE’s history, we have seen some of the most influential and noteworthy celebrities involved in professional wrestling. The first time was at WrestleMania I on March 31, 1985, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Mr. T teamed with Hulk Hogan against Paul Orndorff and Roddy Piper. Professional boxers, Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson, were heavily involved in developing professional wrestling and pop culture.

Artists and bands have been heavily involved too… From Motörhead performing Triple H’s theme song at WrestleMania XVII to Alice Copper and Cyndi Lauper being managers at WrestleMania. As of late, popular artists like Kid Rock and John Legend have performed “America the Beautiful” at past WrestleMania’s.

We have also seen some of the most important professional athletes testing their luck in the ring. New York Giants linebacker, Lawrence Taylor wrestled against Bam Bam Bigelow at WrestleMania XI. He had Green Bay Packers defensive end, Reggie White, in his corner.

An aspect of professional wrestling that is at the highest of levels right now is their storylines. From the Bloodline storyline to CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins, and even the John Cena farewell tour… They are stories that people have no choice but to become invested in. Celebrities who watched WWE during some of the most important eras are watching alongside us to see what happens next.

During the premiere of Monday Night Raw on Netflix, actors like Vanessa Hudgens and Macaulay Culkin attending the event showed the continued tradition of actors supporting professional wrestling. Actors can understand what it takes to entertain an audience when performing on the big screen. With professional wrestling, the support from pop culture will make people become invested in watching more of it.

WWE’s season premiere on Netflix is now in the rear-view mirror. But, the opportunity to involve more pop culture icons and athletes will significantly enhance the product and help preserve it for future fans.
