An Honest Review of Who Killed WCW?

Read Time:1 Minute, 51 Second

The death of WCW has always been an interesting topic to discuss with wrestling circles. Especially when you consider how chaotic the last few years were for the promotion. When it was announced that the team involved in the acclaimed Dark Side of The Ring docuseries were creating one on the death of WCW, many fans were excited. But things gradually didn’t live up the hype…

For years, many wrestling fans wanted an actual WCW documentary. However, the only thing close to that, was The Rise & Fall of WCW documentary produced by WWE which many would say was too biased. This could also apply to Who Killed WCW?

Trying To Make Eric Bischoff Look Good

Who Killed WCW? is a docuseries that’s sole purpose rehabilitates the image of Eric Bischoff. It also takes any blame away from him on the promotion’s death. Sadly the docuseries had the potential to deliver something great. But, it should not be understated how much of the blame truly does fall on Bischoff… From terrible booking, insane contracts, no long term plans regarding the nWo, having terrible relationships with Turner executives, and more.

This should go without saying, but Bischoff is absolutely to blame for a lot of what happened, despite what the docuseries says.

Kudos To Bret Hart

Of all the people in that documentary, the only person who told the truth, was Bret Hart. He also called the people featured, idiots. Another key concerning part was the fact that there was no wrestling reporters or historians of the time challenging the wild and inaccurate claims made. Instead we got Dave Meltzer, who shouldn’t have been part of this. But again, this was just made to call Bischoff a genius.

Who Killed WCW? was a wasted opportunity by the crew of TDSOTR. Unfortunately, this is not their first time missing on a wrestling documentary. The Nine Lives of Vince McMahon, which was also made by them, was a disappointing mess. If you actually want to learn about the death of WCW, read the books Nitro by Guy Evans and The Death of WCW by Bryan Alvarez and R.D. Reynolds.
