Long Term Storytelling: The Elite vs. Blackpool Combat Club

One of the best storylines in pro wrestling this year (so far) has to be the rivalry between The Elite (Kenny Omega, Hangman Page & The Young Bucks) and Blackpool Combat Club (Jon Moxley, Wheeler Yuta & Claudio Castagnoli).
AEW has gone all out for this rivalry, or war, between The Elite and BCC this year. For many, this is one of the best stories AEW has told in their 5-years of existence. This story has connected several threads of long-term booking AEW had since pretty much day one…
A Long Time Coming…
One of the most obvious stories points this feud drew from, is the rivalry Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley had since day one. The beginning of this rivalry saw Moxley attacking Omega after the end of the main event of All In back in 2019. The paths of Omega and Mox have been linked together since.
This rivalry between The Elite and BCC also served as the perfect story to help Hangman Page reconcile with The Young Bucks and Omega. He returned to The Elite once more, and helped them with the threat that is BCC. Having Page return to The Elite was an emotional moment for many AEW fans, and his return to the group was a moment every fan was waiting after several years of up-and-down moments on TV and “Being The Elite”.
Don Callis and Konosuke Takeshita also have an important part in this story too. Don Callis has credited himself as the architect of Kenny Omega’s career. Callis wanted to separate Omega from The Bucks and Page but after realizing he wouldn’t able to do so, he decided to betray Omega and help BCC have a win over The Elite. Callis has also put his eyes on Takeshita as his next project, claiming Takeshita will surpass Omega, and other legends of the sport.
This story is far from over. It is very likely that the ending of this story could be heading towards a Blood & Guts match. We also haven’t mentioned the possibility of Kota Ibushi, former tag team partner and current free agent, join this storyline and assist The Elite. And who knows, another big payoff for this rivalry could take place at All In II in Wembley Stadium…
