Mike Goldberg’s MMA Commentator Mount Rushmore
Mike Goldberg held the most coveted Play-By-Play role in combat sports for nearly 20 years with the UFC before his departure in 2016. He spent the next five years delivering iconic lines in Bellator before he sought out new adventures in 2021.
Goldberg recently revealed his MMA Commentator Mount Rushmore, which has a few names you may not expect. Out of courtesy for his fellow Play-By-Play commentators in the scene, Goldberg kept his picks within the current Color Commentator roster of MMA Broadcasters.
The Mountain
Jokingly placing himself at the top, Goldberg would later establish Joe Rogan as the first name that belongs at the top. “Joe is obviously on there,” said Goldberg. “There’s no question.”
He followed up by dropping John McCarthy as another name that belongs at the top of MMA Commentating. “He’s the greatest referee of all time, but John McCarthy is on there and I knew he would be great at it,” said Goldberg. “But what John is doing at Bellator is absolutely spectacular… I really enjoy listening to Big John.”
Next on Goldberg’s mountain was PFL Color Commentator, Kenny Florian. “I worked with him back in the day and he’s really tremendous,” said Goldberg. Widely considered one of the best to never hold UFC gold, Florian has been a powerhouse in MMA Broadcasting since MMA Live in 2009 and has been a critical role in the PFL’s on-air team since March 2021.
Though Mike expresses his love for the skills of Daniel Cormier, Michael Bisping, and Dan Hardy, the final spot on his Mount Rushmore went to someone else…
“We used to call Jimmy Smith a poor man’s Rogan—well we would all love to be a poor man’s Rogan because it’s the ultimate compliment—because he was so good they compared him to Joe,” said Goldberg. “When I made the move to Bellator, I knew I wasn’t coming in as the long-time UFC voice. I was the new guy and Jimmy embraced me and we had great shows. It was seamless because he’s so good. His talents are not recognized as highly as they should be.”
Mike Goldberg’s MMA Color Commentator Mount Rushmore:
- Joe Rogan
- John McCarthy
- Kenny Florian
- Jimmy Smith
